I have a 2006 Yamaha Roadstar 1700.
How do you adjust the belt on it?

Loosen axle nut, loosen rear brake stay bolt.
Use the bolts next to the axle on either side of the bike to tighten/loosen belt.

Hey Doc maybe you can help.
I just put a new skin on the rear and in order to get it replaced same day, and save 50 bucks labour, I removed and replace the wheel myself. I cant seem to get the belt running center of the pulley. The side that belt is running on is the "tight" side. If I tighten the other side to bring the belt back, the scibes on the adjusters dont match side to side. So I guess the question is...what is more important? The scribes matching side to side or the belt running center?
Thanks in advance.

The belt. The sribes are not even side to side so don't use them.
$50 ... not bad .... the guy here wanted $60 ... so I also did it myself.

Your belt will most likely want to run to the outside of the pulley. That seems to be the norm for these bikes. CLICK HERE for the procedure for rear wheel alignment. Align it per the article and forget where the belt is tracking. You will drive yourself crazy trying to get the belt to track center on the pulley. WARNING Read the note on axle nut torque. Many people have reported that the 110 Ft. Lbs. of torque as stated in the service manual resulted in breaking their axle. It seems Yamaha decided to make a hollow axle. Sounds unthinkable to me, but that is what they did.

I followed the procedure here and had no issues at all. That warning though concerns me. I tightened mine to 110ft/lbs as directed and had no issues. Got to wonder if thier torque wrench was out of spec? It is true though that most bolts can only be torqued a few times before failure. Remember you are stretching the bolt. Torque to yeild bolts like those on car heads are only one time use.
