how many miles can you go on reserve? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
when my 08 rs tank is showing empty and the light comes on how many miles can I go? When I fill up the most I have ever filled up is just over 3 gal. I thought these tanks were closer to 5 gal. My last tank gave me 38 MPG mostly in town ridding.

The short answer is you can run your reserve until the engine quits...
But, basically, there's a little over a half gallon left once you hit the reserve position on the fuel cock...
Reality proves the distance to be about 25 - 35 miles...
And, yes these tanks are rated at 5 plus gallons... (But, don't forget you've got the float and some other "fillers" in there... Plus, unless you've opened up the top of your fill neck, like I did, you're loosing about a half gallon from the top... (Just don't top off the tank unless you're going to travel another 25 miles, or so...) Fuel expands when it gets nice and warmed up...

Get yourself one of those quart sized stainless steel or aluminum bottles and fill it with gas. Next time your light comes on measure the miles before your bike quits. Then just pour in the extra gas from the bottle and head for the nearest gas station. It's the only way to know for sure.

I have an 03 and my idiot light comes on at about 160 miles, and the main runs out at about 170 miles. I took an "extra reserve" with me one time because I was wondering the same thing. I got to 210 milles and came to a station and filled up. Normally when I am on reserve I stop at the next station I come to, unless I am on home turf.

I get about the same a Clifford. 160 to 175 miles when it quits on the main. Then over 200 total with the reserve.

Never ran clear out yet, and will try not to.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I use reserve almost every tankfull in town to prevent any nasty buildup in the bottom of the tank. Almost 3 years and 16000 miles and tank is still clean.

Up to 07 was 5.3 gal. You have EFI which takes up room in the tank. You have a 4.7 gallon capacity. Carry some extra gas or have someone follow you and run it till it dies and see how far you can go. Then don't push that limit. Get gas as soon as you can after the light comes on because you have no reserve.

Keep in mind the key here is to NOT be someplace like the "Wild Hogs" where the nearest gas is 250 miles away

Sounds like you're not really "going to reserve". The light and dial are completely useless and in no way indicate that you're on reserve. The only way to know is to "go to reserve" when the bike tells you to. Then go to the station and see how much it takes. Calculate your MPG and subtract 5 you should have a ballpark of how far you can go before walking.

The 08 has no fuel petcock. You cannot manually go to reserve. On the FI models, the light tells you when you are on reserve fuel. The owners manual says the tank capacity is 4.76 U.S. Gal. Fuel reserve amount is .9 U.S. Gal. The light comes on when you have approximately .9 gals left in the tank. So, based on 38 MPG, you should be bone dry approximately 33 miles after the light comes on. Don't test this theory though, unless you have some spare gas in your saddle bag.

FYI, the tank capacity is less on the 08 because the fuel pump is installed inside the tank on FI models.
