Cranks Slow, NEED HELP ASAP 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Just in the last couple days when engine cold will crank real slow and won't start... just started happening. Other times starts just fine. Starter will stall and one time the gauges reset... gas gauge inop, clock at 1:00. Did battery disconnect and gauges working fine. No starting problem yesterday. This morning same slow crank and difficult to start but only clock reset. Items new are battery, 1 year old, starter cable, starter solenoid. + and - are tight at all connections. Wouldn't you know this has to happen the day before I leave for bike trip. NEED ADVICE ASAP....

Are all the connections and the battery posts clean? Might want to take the battery to the auto parts store and get it load tested.

To have load tested what would the spec be for our batteries? Was supposed to be 310 CCA. Is that what I would use?

All the info they need should be on the on the battery. Your battery can read fine just sitting there with a volt tester but be weak under a load or have a bad cell. You can buy load testers and do it yourself too.

I would say that you have a bad battery or a bad connection! A battery may show 12 volts but not have the amps to get the job done, a load test will show that. If the battery checks out bad then it needs too ne replaced. If the battery checks out good then you have a bad connection somewhere; and the problem is "where is somewhere"? Get a toothbrush size wire brush, a can of contact cleaner (or tuner cleaner), and a tube of dielectric grease. WHILE WORKING ON THE + CONNECTIONS THE BATTERY SHOULD NOT BE GROUNDED!!! Between the battery and the starter at each connection; take it apart, with the cleaner and brush clean both sides of the wire terminal and the contact to which it connects, smear it with grease and reassemble. Do all the connections from the battery to the starter; and do both ends of the battery ground wire.

As I said before if the battery is bad it may show volts but not have amps available, if the battery is good it has the amps but a lousey connection can prevent the amps from getting through.
