Fuel cap leaking 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Yesterday I filled up the tank then parked the bike for about an hour and a half. After lunch, I got on the bike and after about a 1/4 mile started to smell gas. I looked down at the cap and there was a steady stream of gas coming from the key hole. I pulled the bike over and opened up the tank. Once I pulled the cap off it blew like a hot radiator!! About a 1/4 tank of gas just kept flying out of the opening. Once it stopped I put the cap back on and continued down the road with no more excitement. I am in Yuma, Az and it was pretty darn hot out. Not sure if that had anything to do with it or not. Any suggestions out there??

You filled the tank with cool gas then it sat he the heat. The heat expanded the gas resulting in the tank being overfull.

That's the reason I don't fill mine to the top during the summer. We were 114 yesterday. Enough to expand gas and then some.

So, theoretically, that shouldn't happen after doing the gas cap venting mod, right? At least, I've never had it happen, and I fill 'er to the brim whenever I can.

Ok you have confused me
On the front right of my gas tank when I take off the speedo there is a vent tube that a rubber hose hooks to with a little clamp.
I would think the tank should never get pressurized unless that vent is clogged or kinked?
The same should go for a vacumm being created in the tank as gas is used.
Am I not understanding something here?

You are correcct. Also that vent on the tank has an in-line roll-over valve. Can you blow through the hose when you disconnect it from the tank? It exits under the bottom of the bike, below the seat. Guess you will need an assistant...

On the other end of that vent hose is the rollover valve. It's a one way valve. It lets air in to make up for the gas being drawn out but it won't let gas (or air) out. It's like that so gas won't run out the hose in case you tip or dump the bike.

And venting the gas cap is totally separate from that tank vent and the rollover valve...after the procedure, the gas cap lets air in and out, and is mainly done to increase fuel flow rate to the petcock after fuel pump removal. It just becomes an extra vent.

Thank you for enlightening me, so were is the vent to allow the gas to overflow when the sun hits the full tank?

Ummm...I think you found it...the keyhole.

There isn't any overflow valve on the tank to let gas out.
