Falls on it's Face at cruising speed????? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Wondering if anyone can help?? 05 Roadstar with speedstar pipes, ignition module, jet kit and K&N. Have 175 Main, 35 Pilot, 2 3/4 screw out and needle at notch 5. Runs great at idle and WOT but at cruising speed will run fine for about 20 seconds then fall on its face-backfire, sputter and almost stalls. I will let off throttle then it will idle crappy for a few seconds then return to normal. I'm at sea level and wondering if needle, float or jet settings are wrong??

K&N open filter air kit or just the filter in the stock air box? 175 Mik or 175 Dyno main jet? 5th groove from blunt or pointed end?

Mikuni main then. That's way too lean on the needle. When most of us count grooves we start from the blunt end. So you would be in the first groove, not the 5th. Here's some basic jetting starting points - Jetting. Start from the beginning and take it one step at a time. Also click on the tech articles tab and read through the carb section.

My mistake-I took it back apart-"C" clip is on 5th from blunt end. There are six notches.

I would guess you are too rich on the main, needle, and PMS. Got through the jetting process. Also make sure the float level is good. And it wouldn't hurt to run some Seafoam or other cleaner in the gas to clean everything up.

I have an 05 also with Dyna 3000, BAK and V&H powershots.
IMO your main is too rich. I have 167.2 muniki in now. Keep the stock pilot if you have the Barons Needle: counting from blunt end. c-clip on 3rd groove, spacer, 2 washers or c-clip on 4th groove, spacer, 1 washer.
Check here for more carb tuning info: Tech info

Like Musky said you might want to clean her out with seafoam and check your plugs for fouling.

Thanks guys-i'm gunna try 175 main (opposed to 182.5 stock)//35 stock pilot, 4th notch on needle instead of 5th and PMS at 2 3/4 turns. does this sound like a winning combination??? also my needle is set up (front blunt end) plastic dealy then spring then washer the c-clip 4th notch now then spacer then washer-is this correct??

I tried both combinations u guys suggested-bike still runs like crap. get it started and has no power-runs ok at mid-throttle then starts to sputter and backfire??? i'm at a loss here-not sure if it's a carb issue anymore.

Sounds like the same symptoms that you get when you run out of gas. I'm thinking restricted fuel delivery, or low float level..
