Summertime Heat 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I got stuck in traffic Wednesday afternoon. Most of my travel was under 10 mph, when I was moving at all. Couple that with 98 degree heat.

Toward the end of my travel every time I'd go to get on the gas the engine would sound like it was "knocking/pinging" before I'd get enough torque to the rear wheel to get moving. The trip home at 1am had everything back to normal, so I'm inclined to say the heat was the culprit for the new odd sounds.

Seeing the tread about oil coolers has me wondering if I need to invest the time to install one.

Opinions?

I've had the same thing happen to me.

Can't provide any advice besides take a break until the traffic lightens up.

in my opinion the oil cooler and or intercooler would not be effective in stop and go traffic, only at speeds where wind would hit the intercooler and oil lines resulting in bringing down the tempature of the oil.

my opinion and what the hell do I know... I feel yaa brother thou, I am in Dallas and it is fricking hot.

It's been pretty hot here too, not 100's but upper 80's low 90's and stupid humidity! I like the GPS, when I get into a stop and go, I use the GPS to "Find an alternate route" Works pretty good!

Oil coolers need air to flow, so it wouldn't help either. Just find an alternate route.

Agree. Oil cooler would not help without air movement. It's getting hot here in sacramento now too. Only thing I notice so far in 100+ stop and go is the clutch gets a little wonky and idle speed changes. I agree with if it's really a concern find another route or take break. If I did this too often might consider synthetic lubricants.

You might try an inverter and plug in a fan to blow on your motor while sitting in the slow traffic! And if you guys think it's hot where your at we hit 116 on Wed afternoon!!!!

yeah, Dallas traffic sucks for high heat days. 102* outside, sitting on a 200* motor...and waiting at red lights every half mile.

But a faint-due-to-heat day on the bike beats a perfect day in the AC cage anyday.

I give mine a little throttle twist as I sit at idle...and right before taking off, give it a little rolled on bump then let it out and go.

All of the finned type of oil cooles will provide some cooling effect at a stand still. The fins increase the surface area of the cooler thus allowing more heat to be given off. The air flow increases this effect same as our glorious V Twin.
I had an issue with the hot weather knock a couple days ago and realized i did not put my bucks oil cooler back on the filter. It has the fins too. I put it back on yesterday and took it out today. Gave it a feel after the ride and I can tell you for sure it gets mights hot. Must be doing something.

Nothing beats air flow!! I remember last fall while at Fayetteville (Blues,Bikes & BBQ) we had the knocking issue. As we started moving the knock went away. I wonder now if a higher octane fuel might have stopped this knock? Normally I run 87 octane fuel and did so while I was there. Afterward we all felt like the knock was fuel related. Who knows?????
