Road Star Midnight engine problem 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Hi
I think I have a problem with my engine. When I start the engine it runs fine. But when the engine is hot it make some noise like a valvet noise. It make that noise when the engine is working but in cruising the noise is lower. I don´t hear it when the engine is running free. Can someone tell me what is wrong or is it a normal sound. I was told that every engines has his carater. I hope you can help me

Hello nice to have you here. Did you just get the bike or have you had it and this is a new noise?

I am not sure what a Valvet noise is. These are noisy machines and when hot you will hear all kinds of sounds from them you would not hear from a water cooled bike.

Sounds like normal. These engines can make all kinds of noises. Probably just a little lifter tapping. You can try a different oil, some oils help to quiet the engine more than others. Myself, I've been using Mobil 1 automotive full synthetic 20/50w for the past 100k+ miles. Yes, I ride a lot. lol That mileage is in 4.5yrs on the Roadie.
This Yamaha Tech bulletin will give ya some insight to the noises this engine can and will make. http://forums.delphiforums.com/1602/messages?msg=139164.1 hope this helps.

Just took my 2006 midnight with only 22000kms in to have valve adjust done. Bike sounded very noisy when it went in now it is much quieter. Some tapping is normal but if you feel concerned have the valves adjusted.

For the first 20k used stock seat with a backrest, never had an issue, but did need a lower seat due to the pipes that were on there from previous owner. Had a Saddlemen, took me 3 weeks to break it in since I'm a lightweight (145lbs) Droped seat a little bit ago, and the area where the rivets hold the rear metal tongue broke. Now with a PCS lowered stock seat, and no, it's not the potato chip seat. Prefer the Saddlemen tho. Unemployed now, so a new seat is on hold.

Trade it in on a new one. That'll fix it.
