Gold Wings 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I love this Road Star but after spending this summer talking to folks on Gold Wings that we come across in our travels... I gotta say - there might be one in my future.

I thought I might pop for an Ultra Classic one day but to tell you the truth... the Gold Wing - which I never thought I would be caught dead on - looks so sweet to me these days. Talk about a sofa on wheels. I can see taking that to a "four corners" tour of the USA for sure.

Any comments or insight?

I had a 1989 pristine gold wing until May 8th. For long range touring they are hard to beat. I still rode the Roadie more but i do miss seeing the GW in the garage.

Goldwing is a sweet ride if you are going to spend a lot of time on the super slabs riding 2 up. For fun and around town RS is the right bike.

I looked at the 09 GW with airbag and navigation it was $30K (ouch) but it was sweet!

Gold Wings are sweet and surprising fast, other than crotch rockets it'll whip just about anything on the road. I don't care for the seating position, the pegs are under you and I found it uncomfortable. I'm not as flexible as I once was.

I can see myself on a GoldWing but I keep looking at the Valkyrie Rune. A cruiser with the GoldWing engine on steroids. So many nice bikes but my biggest fear is that I would miss so much about the RoadStar that Makes me smile so much now. 20,000 miles and nothing but smiles is hard to improve on.

I have an '05 Goldwing in addition to my '08 Roadstar and I don't think I could ask for a better combo.
The Wing has lots of storage, plenty of hp(118 hp, 112 torque),is wicked fast, handles like a sport bike and is all day comfortable, but the Star is my rumble and cruise machine. I recommend them both.

I'm still not convinced. I got my Roadstar after missing out on an Ultra Classic, I'd sure like the storage space... But a GW? Dang, it sure looks like a streamlined bus going down the road...

My other, bigger complaint is that IMO the GW styling gets out of date quickly. A 15yo UC doesn't "look" much different than a new one...

I had a K12 LT beemer before the r*. It was a hippo. A number of retired friends have GW's and do large amounts of hiway miles annually. I think the GW is about as close to long-distance perfection as you can get. If I ever get to the point where I have the time to go, then yep, GW.

As has been said the GW is a sofa on wheels, and is comfortable to make trips with. They can be a nightmare to work on. I recently replaced the stator on an 85; step one is remove the engine from the frame! I have a friend who's father-in-law has one. The starter quit working and he took it off, and found that the brushes were shot. Guess what the next step is? The starter drives the engine through a chain. When you remove the starter the sprocket and chain fall to the bottom and there is noway to reinstall it without removing the engine! There are a couple of years that to get the rear wheel off you have to remove the rear end gearbox with it!
My personal oppinion of the GW is that if you gave me one, I would take it off your hands and find some sucker to pedal it to.
