Cupping tire ? 7 Years, 1 Month ago
Wondering if anyone could help me on a front tire cupping.
Tire has been on for plus 3000 miles, aligned perfect and I balanced when installing it new. It is a Dunlop Cruisemax 130/90..
It didn't start to cup until about 300 miles ago and now I am going to be forced to change it..
Was wondering if anyone has any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks

~Jack~

Jack, I,m fairly new to owning a roadstar but have worked on bikes for some time and would advise that you check out the front end for anything "loose" such as the fork clamp bolts on the trees, the axle bolt, and pinch bolt. and if possible the stearing head adjustment. My 02 model really benefited from this and it only has 2000 miles on it. It is noticeable when running down the road at about 70 mph and letting off of the throttle and relax your grip on the handlebars slightly, if you feel the bike want to wobble in the front end, then the steering head is to loose and needs adjustment. I would think that to cup a tire that soon some thing may be loose. hope that this help's you out.

Steve:
Thanks for the comeback..
I did go over the front end and retightened everything also did the steering head..

We have a zillion potholes here in Pennsylvania, wondering if a have bent the rim when hitting one..
Will have to check it for true once the new tire gets here.

This one really has me confused.

Thanks again

Jack

I am not familiar with the CRUISEMAX, but the stock Bridgestones on these bikes cup just by looking at them. Mine were cupped in less than 2,000 miles and virtually shot after a little over 6,000. Over 2,000 on my new ME880s and no sign of even thinking about cupping. So while I will not blame the tire not having any experience with it, I would not rule it out either. What tires did you have on before nad how did they do?

Crash my first front tire (Bridgestone) lasted 6000 mile,it didn't cup but were pretty well shot.
The second one was a Dunlop Cruisemax, it lasted 9000 then this one was doing real good for about 3000 and then it started to cup.

As to the Bridgestone, the rear original Bridgestone lasted lest than 3000 miles, I switched to the Cruisemax and am still only getting 4-5000 out of them on the rear..
We do ride two-up probably 90% of the time, so this may contribute to the rear wear..

If everything is balanced and true, then maybe a bad tire. If you had the same tire before and had good results, I would think this should be no different. What air pressure do you run front and back? And remember that you should check pressure no less than once a week. Check rim for trueness, balance, and air pressure. All of these can be done with the wheel on the bike if you can get the front end in the air.

I am going to plug my favorite tires of all time METZLERS ... the ME880s are wearing really well and I have a friend that got 12,000 out of the rear and 16k out of the front (I sure don't expect that, but if I got 12k out of both ends, I would be in heaven). They handle exceptionally well also.

then maybe a bad tire.

This might be the case...

I've been riding MCs over 54 years and this is my first tire I've ever had cup on a MC.

I'm lucky if I check my pressure probably at most twice a month..And unless I have a puncture or a bad valve or a very wide temp change, hardly ever have 1 lb difference with a digital gage.
But I did check the pressure 2 or 3 times since I noticed it cupping, and the pressure was always correct

Thanks for your help..

"I've been riding MCs over 54 years and this is my first tire I've ever had cup on a MC."

With 54 years of experience and never a cup before, my guess is you pretty much know what you are looking for mechanically and maintenance wise. You got about 22 years of riding experienceon me, but I have seen several cupped tires. Generally it has turned out to be just a crappy tire brand (can we say Bridgestone has never made a decent tire in their existence?). But you have had good experience with this tire before, so I am really going to lean more towards you got a bad Monday hangover tire.

Re:Cupping tire ? 7 Years ago
From my own experience with the factory dunlops I will have to say the tire is just prone to cupping. I replaced original rear at 5000 miles and then had to replace both at 7000 miles. I did have a little more usage from the rear tire but as I was changing brands did not want to mix. Front tire became so bad that when front brakes applied the handlebars would jerk left to right. New brand of tires and no problems with wear or cupping.
