Road Star Hard Saddlebags 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Does anyone on the clinic have the Road Star hard bags on their scoot? Im wondering how they look, and what the general opinion is of them, and if they're happy with them. I went to the Star website "build your own" tool and got the below image, but would like to see them from different angles on other peoples bikes also. Thanks for any help and opinions.

I've got the hard bags on my 07 R*. I do like them because they seem to hold more than the leather ones. They do rattle a bit going over rough areas so I've added some weather stripping along the top edge and lined them with felt. This helps, but doesn't get rid of the rattle completely. Also, if you end up having to break one of the hinges, be prepaired to part with $97.00. I can't figure out why a piece of plastic cost so much????

Go to a Yamaha dealer that has the silverado s model and you can see the hard bags in person.

Very roomy bags, look good and I like them, but they are definitely not worth the money if you plan to buy them new. The hinges are plastic and crack (I'm on my second set), the locks are plastic and the lock hasp is plastic--one good yank and anyone can break the lock and be in the bag in 2 seconds. Also, weird contours on the backside not only rob you of some room, but makes mounting them on Ghost Brackets a bitch.

If you can find a used set on eBay cheaply, yes. Although you could pay less for a set of used Venture bags and they are bigger and look sharp. Even a lot of aftermarket bags for 1/4 the price are as big and come with metal hinges & locks, and nice flat backsides for a variety of mounting options.

I'm happy with them because they were on the bike when I bought it used, but if I was in the market to buy new bags I wouldn't buy them unless I got them for dirt cheap.

My 2 cents...

Insurance company just gave me cash to buy new, I bought one new Silverado Bag for like $534 bucks. So after 22K miles i must have liked them or I would have went with something different. I actually wanted to buy hard leather but they didn't make em Although I did see one local that had em Custom made at Trim shop. Odd shape but oddly roomy I can cram way too much in there. Yet I rode a Tour Deluxe and the bags seemed to be larger but they were so narrow I could not fit what I normally take in the RS.

My only complaint about the bags is that due to the double stacked pipes on the right side the bags are mounted a bit high and just look funny if/when you change out the exhaust.

Lucky for us there's an ingenious guy named Geno who makes hardware to easily lower the bags down to a more eye-pleasing level. Here's how you find his stuff.

Also, if you want to see more views of a bike with the bags check out my flickr pages here.

Not sure how handy you are but you should look at some of the members here that have adapted the Royal Star bags to their Roadies. In my opinion, they are the best looking bags. I have a Venture and they do just fine as far as space.

Re:Road Star Hard Saddlebags 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I just went thru this myself over the past year. I commute daily and really would prefer a naked bike for ease of service, handling etc. but need to carry enough stuff that a bag and bungee's wouldn't work for me. I ended up buying a set of plain silverado bags and brackets from someone selling them on this site for a great price. I don't have access to a shop so I can't fabricate or modify off brand brackets, etc. As I looked at the S-type hard bags on bikes at the dealer they seemed quite flimsey and although larger I didn't think they would last. If you search the site you will see examples of lots of different hard bags you can make work if you're handy and have tools, etc. Whatever you ebnd up with post some pics as the bag issue comes up alot around here. If both of these load this one shows how the bags are mounted too high when you change pipes. They are ok. A little on the small side for my liking. I am trying to find some good leather bags. I really like the look of the bags on the new Indian Chief.
