That's exactly what it means...just had to replace mine. You can try taking it out and cleaning the contacts & tightening the connections, but it didn't work for me...still died.
That little green plug you have to unplug before you take the tank off is connected to the fuel sender. Just two bolts on the bottom of the tank. Off & on real easy. You do need to maneuver it side to side a little to get the float assemble out, but it's nothing...you'll see what I mean when you do it. Once you have the tank off, the whole R&R process is less than 10 minutes.

Slopoke. LOL I know, you needed to account for the 1 beer job.
Shoot, I still left a gallon of gas in the tank, tank off and on and unit replaced in the 10 min, then again, I don't drink. lol

When I pulled my old one out to clean it, the contacts and unit itself didn't appear to have any deposits. It was just...dying.
But hey, it's cheaper than the $60 for a new unit, so if it works, why not give it a try...

The contacts can be oxidized and you'll never see it until you clean it. Like when you think your carpet is clean until you move a piece of furniture and see what the rug used to look like!
Use an eraser pencil that can be sharped to a point. Get the ink eraser type. Clean off the contacts on both sides. (Stationary circuit board and floating "feelers" on arm.)
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE "FEELERS", THEY ARE VERY FRAGILE!
Also, carefully bend the feelers in a little towards the board to increase the contact pressure.
Spray everything off with contact cleaner. (made for electronics)
If that was the problem...It won't be any more!
