A tip that might be helpful:

The center bolt in the rear rocker cover doesn't clear the frame. Loosen it up and pull it half-way out and run a twisty or a piece of wire around it and one of the bolts next to it (also half-way out) you can then slide the rocker cover out with both bolts still in it.

Keep in mind I did mine a year ago according to the book> the feeler gauges said it didnt need to be done but I did it anyway with no real improvement. this time i sent it to my mechanic freind who also said it didnt need to be done. I said do it anyway so he did and it worked well. only differance was that he backed them all off completely before doing adjustment.

"01" model 102k + miles, have yet to look or do valve adjustments. What I have noticed over the yrars, too lean carb setting does slightly increase the tapping issue. I also found that different oils have have an affect on how noisy the lifters get. I use Mobil 1 15/50 automotive full syn. at aprox 6k miles on oil, gets a little noisier, so I know it's time to change.

Earl - *great* tip...thanks.

Helmut - Did you do the initial adjustment because of 16K service or the 1/16 to 1/8 open throttle noise?

Erbman02 - I appreciate the insight...100K+ miles speaks volumes. It definitely doesn't have the "tappy valve" sound I heard in my family's slant 6 growing up. Hmm...
