After hours and hours searching I can't find the article I'm looking for. Now I'm wondering if it exists at all. One of the clinic members described a way to build your own air kit using a couple of off the shelf items from the local autoparts store (exhaust pipe corners and K&N filter) and a homemade bracket. Am I just dreaming this ?

There's 2 filters from K & N, one is 5" round the other is oval. They are under the HD filters section on their web site, the oval is RC-1980. I don't know the number for the round. I did it also. but for the 42hsr carb it's not the same for the stock carb due to diameter. I ordered mine thru Discount auto, was dropped shipped to my house, then went to West marine and got a piece og flat tsainless 1" x 8" cut it in half and fabbed brkts, ran about 75 bucks

Thanks guys. Was there a thread that used a similar approach but involved a forward facing cone filter? for some reason that is what is coming to mind. i can't decide if Mr. C's or the cone filter is the way to go.

Jamie,
do you have a parts list and procedures? is there a way to do it without welding? I've tried it and i usually end up making holes in the material or lighting something on fire....

Here are the dimensions for the back plate:

Link to larger image
Its not the most accurate drawing because I did it in paint (AutoCAD is down right now ) but the dimensions are what I used.
The filter is from Green Filters. I will have to check the part number out tomorrow, but it is one of the ones with a mounting I.D. of 2.44".
The elbow is a SHORT aluminum pipe elbow. Its way overkill and super heavy, but it had the right O.D. There is a flange on the back side of the back plate with the same O.D. as the mouth of the carb. Can't remember what size it is off hand either. I'll have to check that out as well tomorrow. The small filter hanging off the bottom is for the crankcase breather.
Oh, and I don't think there is a way to do it without welding unless you can rub the parts together really, REALLY fast to fuse them together.

Guess I'll just have to go buy a case of fire extinguishers and lots of spare parts

As long as you don't burn your bike to the ground, you'll be okay.
