Pinging 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Yesterday temps were 32 deg celcius. Noticed that the bike was a little louder than normal which I can understand. However, occasionally when taking off in first gear i was getting pinging like you would if you tried a take off in 3rd. This has not happened before.
I am thinking I may be too lean. Currently the only mod I have is the K&N filter in stock box. The carb has been put back to stock and pipes are stock too.
Any ideas guys

I noticed some pinging in mine recently when it was hot and I was sitting in traffic. Mine is all stock FI, except for stage 3 exhaust. They will all do it if they get hot enough.

Yeah I second what Road_Hawg said... I sat in traffic for an hour last weekend, and it was like 95* outside. My bike was noisier than ever after that. That's the one thing I can't stand about these Road Stars - they're friggin noisey. I rode my uncle's Harley over the weekend, and couldn't hear the motor whatsoever... just the sound coming from the pipes. Harley's done a GREAT job on insulating the noise coming from their motors. Yamaha, on the other hand, needs to put a little more research into that, IMO.

:-DD.

**side note** I also noticed after putting the windshield on for the first time on this bike, I could hear the engine A LOT more than normal. I guess the winshield acts as a sound deflector.

I doubt you got lean since your last ride unless you changed something. Did you fill the tank recently? If you were doing a lot of slow riding in those temps it may have just been hot.

I would think gas with too low octane.

You know, like the kind with ALCOHOL in it called "regular"!

DrumDon: I also noticed after putting the windshield on for the first time on this bike, I could hear the engine A LOT more than normal.

I agree!

As far as the pinging, try octane boost. Seems to work in mine.

Dont know what 32c is on Farenheit but it was 97F today here in Norte Florida and mine did it for the first time since owning this R* TOO. I am leaning toward the gas being the problem. They have been putting ethanol in it for a while now and I cant find any without it. Maybe the gas companies are putting a little more than they should (up to 10%)?

Is there anything we can do to offset the Governments requirements for additives?
