Re:Pinging 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I was told by a friends son who is a dealership mechanic that the 98" engine 'racket' is caused by the 'cheap chrysler lifters' used in the 98" collapsing somewhat on the rod end thus allowing them to 'slap around' between strokes.

He said it wasn't a problem.

It recently occured to me to think of it and I am trying to find out from him if the 102" lifters will interchange as his Dad has a 2005 RS and it does not make the 'racket' my 99 does.

Mine's on '06, and has the racket. Louder when it's hot/in traffic, but even did it on the Interstate at 60 degrees this AM driving to work. Aside from the noise, runs top-notch.

:Update - Helmut took his to the dealer...his was just a valve adjustment.

Been a while since last on here and I stumbled on this thread. Good thing because I was getting ready to tear my beauty apart. I figured valve adjustment. I just came off a ride from work. What I did notice is that my noise becomes more prominent when I have very little gas is the tank. I had been riding around all week with my brothers at the National Roundup in Atlanta with a full tank of gas, just the normal noisy engine. Today the noise was unbearable and kinda scary but I actually had to turn over to the reserve to get to the station. I'll take her out when the sun goes down and see if she's still angry at me!

Make sure it's not something touching the underside of the tank ... like a fuel line cllp.

Lumberjack did you figure out why your air filter was oil-soaked? I had the same issue and I think it was because someone overfilled my oil and then the crankcase vent spat it out when I was tearing down the highway.

Lemme know how yours went, I'm curious to hear.

Drago - I think mine was overfull last oil change - I was still using the dipstick. The oil looked as if it had been there a while.

Okay boys...just lost the front cylinder. Was on my way to pick up customer bike for detailing. I'll let you know what I find. I will say this, that front cylinder isn't making any noise now! Rear cylinder firing, front cylinder dead. I'm leaning toward loose plug. If this is so the dealer will have a very upset owner! The bike went in for a warranty item. Now this...

Also check the resistors in the plug boots, they have been know to go bad, think they are 10k ohms you can use 6 gauge copper wire instaed too, just cut to length. Also check continuity , I had a boot that corroded the internal contacts.
