Plugging a tire 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Had some big fun this weekend. Go out to ride Sunday and my brand new rear tire is almost flat. I drive it up to the gas station and put air in. I also notice the nail in the tread, but left it there. I then went a a short ride. Sure enough, the tire was leaking enough that something had to be done. I went to put enough air back in to get home and while pulling on the $*@%$*$$# rear valve (what fun putting air in the back tire). The whole valve stem comes out in my hand.

Dealer has the tire. They said they could replace the valve stem, but if the nail punctured the tire they would not plug it for liability reasons. Is it safe to use an automotive tire plug kit to fix this? These Metzlers have less than 800 miles on them.

Thanks.

A lot of people will not recommend any tire repair on their motorcycle. They do make a good repair kit that has a "special" type of "plug-patch". A material that pulls through the hole from the inside to keep dirt and grit out of the hole and a nice big patch on the inside to keep the air in.

Haven't used it on my on Metzlers, but have had them installed on customer tires.

Your choice, look around, find someone that uses these and make you own choice.

I had the same experience about two weeks after I bought my bike. So I bought the cheapest repair kit from Autozone, about $4. I had no trouble plugging the rear tire, did not have to remove from the bike. Although I've seen it done many times, this was my first "solo". I would buy the slightly more expensive kit with the T-shaped handle. It's alot easier to push plug into tire. Have ridden about 2500mi so far with no noticable difference. Tire holds air and feels just fine. Try it.....you'll like it. Vowed to keep a kit in my saddlebag if I ever make a trip. I daily commute. BOL

II've done it and put 10K on the tire afterwards, It's so "All depends" that you will hardly find anyone who will tell you to do it. Any patched tire is called a Maypop. You can send me the tire though, I'll plug it and let ya know how many miles I got out of it. And i'd put 40 Lbs of air in that too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... I'll plug a tire ONLY to get me home.

Otherwise, you're asking for a heartache.....

No one's going to argue that a plugged tire is more dangerous than one that is not in this thread.

But my offer still good about taking his tire and running it out and letting him know how many miles I got out of it.

Far more dangerous is that 99.9% of riders jump on having never checked the air pressure much less checked the whole tire for things like nails. By time a tire goes flat from a nail, it's most likely been there for weeks.
The danger is in not paying attention to the tires like you should. I'd rather pay close attention to a plugged tire than run a new one like it's invincible. Yea yea yea, everyone does that but no one will admit it.

Just plug it. If the plug comes out or doesn't hold, the tire is not going to explode, it just goes flat again. Keep an eye on your pressure and the plug.

If you're concerned, how about installing a tube?
