Rookie Question 1st post 5 Years, 1 Month ago
|
|
Greetings all, just made the switch to the V-Twin world and sofar so good. I'm in the process of tweaking the bike to me and would like to adjust the preload. However, the 2001 RS I purchased didn't come with the OEM toolkit.
Does anyone know the wrench size I need to do the job?
BTW great site and I look forward to the Roadstar world.

Thanks for the welcome, I guess I'll get the old ruler out to confirm the 32mm. I called the local dealer and of course you can't buy the one tool, you must buy the entire kit for $40. Once I get the shock adjusted I think I'll look into an aftermarket metric toolkit.
Thanks again...

My '02 R* is also missing the tool kit. Is there anything in there that I really need? Or are the standard tools found in an average tinkerers garage good enough to get by with?

With the exception of a couple of large wrenchs (like the 32 for the shock), if you have a good selection of tools in the garage, you're not missing anything.
Here's the kicker though. If you're in the middle of nowhere (and I go there often) and you encounter some type of mechanical issue requiring tools, you'll sure wish you had them then. I also always wear my leatherman, which is a fantastic tool.
But I have NEVER reached for the tool bag under the seat for tools to do any of the jobs I've tackled in my garage as I have better tools in my boxes.

Hawkeye ....yamahas tool bag is actually a good bag for on the road minor adjustments well worth the effort of aquiring or duplicating with a better brand of tool...Gives you peace of mind when on the road and tightening that bolt to rid a rattle ...change a plug ...adjust the carb etc.....Coug

Hey Hawk
See my sissy bar bag. All the tools that came in the kit. Tools of my own. Extra wire. Fuses. Electrical tape. Duct tape. Every bolt I've taken off the bike. Zip ties. Loctite Blue and Red. JB weld.....But I think you should at least buy and carry the OEM tool kit.
