Oil Change Question 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I am ready to switch to synthetic oil and have a question. I remember reading somewhere on here that when you drain the oil you only get 4 of the 5 quarts out of the bike. Is there a problem with mixing the oils? I am switching to Rotella 5w40 and ST 7317 filter. Thanks for your help.

When I hear people say that you can't mix dino & synthetic oils, I just get a bottle off the shelf that says "semi-synthetic" on the label! It doesn't matterl all engine oils are compatable and can be mixed with no problems.

I am A.S.E. certified & have been trained on G.M. (stands for Government Motors now!), Isuzu, Mazda & Hyundai. I have also taken a lubricants training course through Valvoline & throughly research everything I do to my precious Roadie before I do it. I personally have switched oil from Yamalube to Shell Rotella S.A.E. 5W-40 with no ill effects. Actually, my top-end noise when hot has disappeared! I assure you you will be doing no harm to your Roadie, instead you'll be prolonging it's life. You might want to change your oil at the regular dino interval for the 1st change directly after the switch. The ST 7317 is an excellent filter, much better than any standard filter you can buy. I personally use the Purolator PureOne, but I'm very particular.

Very good point, Clifford! I never thought of that! Actually if you couldn't mix them, my automotive shop would have alot more engine work! Very few cars (or bikes) come from the factory with synthetic oil. That means everyone who uses synthetic oil had to switch to it at some point. On any engine, there is residual oil left in various places in the engine, somewhere between 1/2 to 1 quart. So most every engine that is running synthetic oil has had a mixture of synthetic & dino at one time. I have never heard of a single problem when this happens. So save the dinosaurs & use synthetic!

Thanks for the quick replies. I knew I could rely on clinic members to provide quick, expert answers! Will be changing the oil this weekend and installing a Memphis Shades batwing fairing.

I always heard the brand of oil doesn't matter when adding, but the 20w50 is what makes the difference. Oil is oil, but stay the same 20w50 or what ever you use. JMHO

I want a batwing so bad! I'm so jealous! Let me know how you like it & if you get much better wind protection over the O.E.M. windshield. How much do the batwings cost? Do they make a kit specifically for the Road Star?

Memphis Shades has a quick release mount for the roadstar. I purchased a second one to put on the original windshield so I will be able to easily take one off and put the other one on. I saw them at Sturgis and they really look good. Memphis Shades was selling and installing them there for $475 plus tax, I got this on ebay from Bikerhaven out of Alabama for about $330 and $50 for the second set of mounts. Their shipping was very fast, less than a week. I am going to have to be careful though, since getting back from Sturgis I have purchased the fairing and a set of Lindby highway bars. Just doing my part to get the economy back on track.

Your going to love the fairing. I have my standard shield hanging from the ceiling in the shop, but I doubt it will ever be put back on.
