ape question 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Hi there,

I'm considering going with 16" apes on my R*. I'm just wondering what I should be looking for in diameter, pullback, etc. I like the ones that are wide on the bottom. I looked on ebay and everything seems to be for harleys, does this make a difference?

Also, for cable Extensions, I hear Clifford is good, I assume he can tell me how longer the cables need to be?

Thanks for any info!!!

Rej

I'm in the same situation as rej. I just bought a used 2006 Roadstar 1700 that already has 12" apes installed, but I want to go bigger. I am leaning toward a 16 or 17 inch bar and maybe some aftermarket risers, but I don't know what to look for concerning pull back and width at the controls. I found the Barons Kong Bar (16" but it is rather pricey ($190). There are several cheaper bars that I have found that say they are for Harleys. Will these work on my bike? Any information would certainly be helpful to me and most likely rej as well. By the way, I am a new member. I look forward to learning from you guys.

I got my bars from Clifford here on the clinic. They are Burly brand and made specificaly for our Roadstars. My throttle cables are plus 10 from JP cycles, Clutch cable plus 12 from JP Cycles, Brake line plus 10 from Phat Performance. I absolutley love the bars, big and beefy and they line up with the tripple trees perfect.

I'd recommend Drag Speciaties 16" apes that are 1 1/2" in diameter - the thickest on the market that you could get. I've heard two horror stories of guys that went with 1" thick bars (they almost lost their lives... but I won't get into that). Not only are these bars totally strong, but they also make for easy internal wiring because the wires just pull right through with virtually no resistance. AND they look killer! I was parked next to another Roadstar that had 1" apes and my bike just looked bigger and badder. I've got 1.5" thick engine guards too, so everything complements each other.

I got mine through Clifford. He saved me about $50 or $60 just on the price compared to if you went through an online retail shop or catalog. If you order through him, tell him you're looking for the Tolemar 1.5" Apehangers #600704. Tolemar makes the "Big Buffalo" bars for Drag Specialties.

Here's the link to the Tolemar bars that Clifford can get you at a HUGE discount from the stated price:

You'll have to get the Big Buffalo risers for these bars as well.

By the way, I got +10" over braided cables and brake line (through Clifford) and they're perfect for 16" tall handlebars - not too long, not too short.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the info. I love the way the bars look on your bike. I am not sure if 16" is what I want to go with (I may want more)so let me ask you a few questions:

1. What is the height from the seat to the hand grips? I realize this will be hard to get exact, but a
close measurement would help me get an idea of the possible riding position.

2. What kind of risers do you have on your bike? How much rise do the risers give you?

3. What is an estimated price tag for the risers, bars, and cables?

Thanks for your help. Hopefully I will make a decision on which bars I want and go ahead and pull the trigger to get this project started.

-I'm 6'2", and have a low seat (from "DemonsCycle" on eBay). The grips are straight out or maybe 1" above my shoulder when in the normal riding position. I'll see if I can get a measurement from seat to grips soon.

-I've got 1.5" tall risers (which are also 1.5" thick in the mounting diameter) - the shortest version of those risers you can get... Click here to check them out. 16" tall bars plus the 1.5" risers equal 17.5" of total rise from the tree.

-As far as price, like I said, Clifford can get you approximately $50 discount from the price stated on the CustomChrome website I mentioned in my post above. I got the risers from Metric Thunder - the cheapest I could find them (see above link). Cables were about $145 through Clifford.

Alright, again let me know if you have any questions.

Here's another photo of my bike (before I lowered it):
