Get some loud pipes, that will make the engine noise go away.

I have an '02 with 44,000= miles and it gets noisy, especially when HOT outside and stop-and-go.

If you are concerned, read up on adjusting the valves and go for it.

Check where the noise is specifically coming from with a mechanics stethoscope first.

HEY Welcome to the Site
I have a 2004 with 17k miles on it now and after riding for 1/2 hour in the heat it sounds like a loose shovel head or well worn in Triumph 650 from the old days. I mean the rear piston slaps so loud it sounds like it knocking even through a full face helmet.
But it starts easy, runs strong and gets 45mpg average, it is the best tool I have in the shed and the one I use the most.
Keep that oil fresh ( I use Dino 20/50 and change it + filter every 3k) and run it up against the rpm limiter in 2nd gear once in a while, from what I've seen and heard this bike will still be running when I can't ride anymore.
Gotta love old proven technology when it is paired with new improved metal tech.

I just had my valves adjusted on my '04. The KLACKITY - KLACK after it warmed up has subsided significantly. There is still some there but not nearly like it use to be. Its one heck of alot quieter. I am due for an oil change and am considering changing from Mobil 1 V-twin to another synthetic. Lots to read out there about oil in the R*C history, I wont even go there to inquire... I will just read
