PMS 7 Years ago
My 04 rs was setup by the dealer with a v&h propipe, BAK, and Baron's jet kit. Bike appears to run strong at speed, however at low throttle openings in low gears (just off idle) she surges a little. Additonally there is an exhaust backfire at hard decel. Silverado stock ws in high position. I ride at 75 mph or above and the mileage is around 35 mpg. Starts easily with full choke for 5 seconds and then 1/2 choke for another 5 seconds. I have an intermittent exhaust valve hang and I am currently treating the symptom with ring free 1/2 oz. in every tank. Now hangs only very occasionally. Plan to have the dealer take care of that next winter when the problem is worsened by the cold weather.

OK so now the question - tried to adjust the PMS following either the "get rid of the decel bang", or richen it, lean it and set for the highest rpm. At 0 turns the motor idle is decreased and rough, but still running. at 4 1/2 turns the idle speed has steadily increased - I never reach a too rich condition. Soooo what's up. Why isn't my mileage better, and why can't I seem to be able to adjust the PMS according to the tech tips? I will have access to an EGA tomorrow.

Post edited by: santacruiser, at: 2005/05/16 03:09

There are three distinct circuits in the RS carb, each of which is designed to cover a different throttle range. The Main covers top 1/4, the needle from about 1/4 to 3/4, and the pilot first 1/4 (these are quarters of full throttle turn).

If one of them is off, you often end up leaning another one out to compensate. Based on your mileage, it sounds like either your main or your needle is off. Based on the number of turns your PMS screw is out, it might be the main (needle lean to compensate). This is just a guess though.

You should start with the main. Test it using the WOT test (tech tips - stock carb). If it is good (little to no change in acceleration when backing off - be sure to read the article), then you can probably assume your needle clip position needs to be adjusted.

You need to start with the main, since changing it changes everything else.

Do you know what main, and what needle clip position the dealer set you up for?

Do you still get backfire on decel at 4 1/2 turns on the PMS? Look out for this far out, the PMS screw can vibrate completely out...

Also, what air kit, exhaust, is AIS intact, is manifold ported, and does your exhaust system still have the baffles ??
