oil fill plug 2 Years, 9 Months ago

This may have been posted on here before. If so...sorry. But maybe the newer guys(like me) could use the info. If anyone remembers ,i posted a question about having oil show up in the hex slot of the crankcase oil plug and nowhere else on the bike. Well i found the culprit. I must have tightened it too tight when i changed the oik and put a hairline crack in the plug. The clymer manual just says reinstall plug and tighten...which "IMO" i just snugged it up pretty good and not too tight. Well found a post in tech section that said "tighten to 10ft lb" so i did w/new plug and realized thats much lighter than my "snug". Never had to use a torque wrench on an oil plug before but from now on if something says.. use a torque wrench...i darn sure will from here on in. Havent rode bike since but hope that was the problem. R* clinic to the rescue again. If this post is redundant let me know and i'll delete it. Thanks AGAIN!

Democracy is two wolves and a small lamb voting on whats for dinner. Freedom under a constitutional republic is a well armed lamb.

Thats not the place to fill oil, unless the engine was opened and all oil is drained. on oil changes aprox 1 qt of oil still remains in the engine, you can never drain it all. fill oil thru the dipstick tube, 2 gts, replace dip stick and tighten, start engine, give a couple of revs, shut bike, take out dip stick, add another 2 qts, screw dip stick back in. done deal.

yea thanks i know that now . There were 2 posts on changing oil in tech section and i didnt see there was an "update" to the post quoting that the info was for a dry engine. Was it critical? Everything seems fine re oil level etc..

No, nothing critical, other than ya cracked the darn thing. Reason for use of that plug on a totally dry engine, is that you put the oil into the crankcase. On an oil change, the dip stick tube puts oil into the oil tank, hence the reason to start it first then the last 2 qts go in. If ya had a totally dry engine and used the dip stick tube to put oil in, then started bike, there would be no lube in engine...not good.

lol 10-4 put new plug in and waa-laa no more leak i cant say enough how glad i am that this site is here and that everyone shares their knowledge. My local yam shop is so pathetic they cant even order a bolt correctly. It takes 2-3 weeks to get the wrong parts constantly so this site is my bible... Thanks again
