drive pulley leak 2 Years, 8 Months ago
found fluid leaking outside front pulley cover.after cover removal I found fluid covering the pulley and the inside of the housing.after cleanup I noticed the pulley nut is only hand tight!I dont know how this could be.the nut has tool marks and the locknut is rebent.I`ve had the rear tire replaced twice in the last 16 mo.both dealers swear they didn`t touch the pulley.I can`t beleve it came from the factory this way!It is a $200 dollar job to replace the oring and seal.Iam going to try to do this myself.anyone out there have this problem?I have a 05 1700 roadie with just over 16000mi.

The dealer would've had no reason to touch the front pulley for sure for a tire change, so I don't know how it could've been screwed up like that unless it came from the factory that way. Maybe it's one of those "Monday" or "Friday" bikes.

No recall on that part.

If the belt is too tight it will cause the bearing to fail and oil seepage.

Could have so easily been an improperly tensioned belt after one of those tire changes.

Thanks for the heads up on the belt tension.I`ll definetly bring this to my dealers attention in the morrow.by the way, would this also cause the nut to be only hand tight?

Hey I'm not tryin to hijack this thread but I have a ligit question on belt tension. I installed the PCS spring this winter. Tension has the "required" slack while on a center stand. Lower the bike to normal riding and the belt is waaaaaay tight...Should I be checking tension on the side stand or center stand? I 'm being lazy here

Doen't matter wether the bike is on the kick stand or straight up; the rear wheel should be on the ground with the weight on it.

Buddy 16000 miles is not much but I would think that that would be a the right amount of miles for failure on the O-ring but you will never convince Yamaha of that or any other motorcycle brand

Hi JYDD,
Had the same problem with my drive pulley nut coming loose on my way back from Florida to Ohio. All I did was re-torque the pulley nut and was good to go. Oil stopped leaking and she's been fine ever since. Maybe worth a try! could save you $200 if the bearing not damaged.
