Exhaust opinions please...... 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Have a set of Cobra Boulevards on my '00 Roadie, but am looking for that certain sound. Been thinking of doing the "Stage 3" mod to my stock set of pipes as I am looking for more of a deeper rumble.....Cobra's have a pretty good crackle to them, really noticeable when traveling at freeway speeds (and beyond!!). The outlet pipe on the baffles in the Cobra's seems pretty small and am assuming this where the high note is coming from.

Picking brains out there..........

Anyone modify Cobra Boulevards for a deeper tone or is the "Stage 3" mod on stock pipes the way to go?

I have a set of Road Burner Road pros on my ride they are nice and deep not overly loud if your not on the throttle much. But when you jump on her she gets loud!

I have the black pipes...may go to chrome set when these rust up in a year or two cause i like the sound that much! I will keep the same brand. Or some day or a set of road house duels when I make it a solo machine.

I agree with the Road Pros. I liked the sound of stage 3, and I think the Road Burners come close to that sound (but better), and with a great look and mount much lower to allow lowering of the saddlebags.

Try looking at the Samson Rolled Thunder. I too, like most of us was looking for the sound. Try going to YouTube and search exhaust. You will find alot of B4 & Afters. You will find a B4 & After of a Stag 3, and a Samson Rolled thunder

I saw the vid, and bought the pipes. They are slip ons, so no re-jetting required. I love them, and they also have a great look. I Hang with alot of Harley riders and they like them to. I get alot of complements on the sound, and the looks of my ride in general from the Harley crowd, if that makes any difference to you.

They had the Sound, and they had a difference look, and I was sold when I saw the video.

Here in a link. I could not find the exact one, but you can hear the difference on Harley,:

I will attach a Pic of my ride so you can see them on a RoadStar

One of the guys I ride with has some Hooker pipes on his Harley Classic........love the sound coming out of those. Those have a large diameter opening and it's really hard to describe the tone from those......very deep rumble at idle and a good "roar" going down the road.

Also the reason I'm looking at the "Stage 3" mod is the balance pipe between the mufflers on the stockers. Advantages-disadvantages to this in keeping the cylinders balanced? Any affect on tone with the balance pipe?

Balance pipes are particularly helpful for the production of low-end torque is what I read long ago.

It's also a benefit of going with a 2 into 1 system.

I too have V&H longshots and love the sound, deep with a good 'potato- potato' I get lots of compliments. My riding mate has Cobras that look similar, but with a cross over, I hate the noise. It sounds more like a pickup truck!

Just finished doing a coupe of modifications to the Cobra pipes. As I said before, the outlet pipe on the baffle seemed really small and found out that it was stepped down to a smaller size about an inch outside the baffle end plate. Cut about 1 1/2 inches off this pipe to where it was the same diameter as the inner baffle pipe........it lowered the tone. Being that I can't leave well enough alone, started by drilled 1/2 inch holes at 12 and 6 o'clock in the baffle end plate.........better yet. What the heck, two more at 3 and 9, much better. Still thinking about Stage 3 on my stock pipes...........just some info for anyone else who has the Cobra's and doesn't want the sharp tone...
