Starter or Switch or Battery Problem??? 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Not real sure what is going on, when the bike is cold starting is a breeze, however once I get warmed up and don't let it sit and cool and try to restart when I hit the starter I get nothing no clicking no grinding just nothing, sometimes just hitting the button again works other times gotta turn key off wait a couple seconds then try all over sometimes that works sometimes is don't, there really doesn't seem to be any pattern to what is going on other than it does this when warmed up and bike is only off for a few minutes(ie getting gas is a pain in the a**), , dealership said bad battery, put in new one, same problem, good thing I am bald or would be pulling what I had out. Any help or ideas is appreciated as always.

Hey Chief. . .Retired Coastie here (W2). . .anyway. . .have you checked your fuses?? I would change them out and see if that has anything to do with it. . .when they heat up they may be breaking contact. . .not sure and it sounds hoaky to me too but I've seen strangeer things.
Also, check your battery leads, and the starter cable are they loose? Heat does strange things to electrical components. Good luck to you with this. I really like your quote in your signature! Fair winds and following seas.

Thanks for the tip, will give the fuses a shot! TV retired Coastie huh? That must mean you are over 6 feet tall so you could walk ashore if your cutter sank!! Sorry had to say it, but seriously thanks for your past service. Thanks again.

And I appreciate your's . . . I'm used to the navy/coastie jokes. I was stationed at NAVSECGRUACT Northwest in the late 70's early 80's. but I've also bailed a few Navy RM's out of jams when LIBO was granted as well.

I had a similar problem a while back. Turned out to be the ignition switch.

WOW...this sounds similar to my problem but mine blows the main fuse. My next test is the key switch.

I had the exact same problem with my 02. cured it with new starter and battery cables. bought the maxair engineering cables. it was like night and day. hot and cold doesn't matter any more, i don't even have to choke sometimes. i'd start there.
