harveje was it my SVS cure you downloaded? As for the valve adjustment it isn't as hard as the service manual makes it out to be. I need to write up the simple process for it and post it on my site. It is the way my wrench does it and he owns a shop and he builds racing bikes and does service on metric and HD's. It is just a pain to pull everything and do it but it isn't that hard. Synthetic oil, iridium plugs, and hit the limiter will keep it running good.

I'm pretty sure it was and Thank you for all the info...I put everything on my iphone so if I'm out at least I have some reference material to go by. The bike sat in the showroom for a few months so I've been running the old gas out of her in between down pours. I'm easily amused so just watching and listening to her purr is awesome. I'm pretty sure she is fine since who ever had her took the care they did, it's just that unusual noise or vibe that throws me off. I'm in process of reading the service manual on valve adjusting, do you think I need to do it or just foam it, change fluids and stretch her out?
Thanks,

Hi,
I got an 04 also. I have about 20K miles on it and I can tell you when it gets warm I joke about it jap-slap'n it's way down the road. It almost sounds like an engine knock but what I have found is that it is piston slap I believe in the rear cyl. I understand that some of these 1700's have it rather pronounced and some don't. Mine happens to be a little loud but it but I get good mileage, it always starts good and it runs good. Yes I could probably quiet it down with some Mobile 1 but I like the old Dino 20/50.
When I get 200K miles on it I'm going to re-do the bottom end and put a big bore kit in it, I'm sure it will quit slapping then LoL

The piston slap is what my brother said too...Air cooled more clearance...... Liquid cooled engines seem to soak some of the noise up. Thanks to everyone for your input... She has stock pipes and I want to punch them out a little, what is the best easiest way to do this? Dealership is replacing the fuel sender next week After that I plan to pull the exhaust, check / clean carbon if any, Do a fluid / filter change, and work on the noise pollution level a little.... Again Thanks

In most cases, piston slap happens when the engine is cold..as it warms up, the slap will disappear........

Flashback, that's exactly what I've been thinking!

In fact, every explanation I've ever been given on R* knock/ping/slap/clatter is counter-intuitive, because the clearances should all get smaller when warm, not bigger. I simply do not buy the oil thinning story Yamaha puts out. Were that the case, I would notice a big difference with different viscosity...but i don't. As I've said here before (too many times lol) nothing has changed the basic character of my '07, which is that it sounds utterly beautiful, like a blue printed hot rod, for about 15 minutes. Then it sounds like it's about to break a piston or throw a rod under a light load. But it runs fantastic when I get on it! Very fast right now, and I still haven't ported the manifold! It sounds GREAT wide open, and it sounds great at anything less than about 1/16th throttle. But just when I'm having fun with it, I'll need to accelerate gently in traffic, and there's that knock

So, it's a mix of good and not so good. I love the bike, but I do wish it would shut up a bit.

MidStar that is a spark knock your talkin about your rpms are to low to accelerate good so you get the knock. Downshift and you won't have that problem these bikes like rpms.
harveje I checked my valves at 16000 like the book calls for, I finally adjusted them at 28000 and it helped with the noise but you can still hear em they just make a racket that is the good old pushrod engine for ya. I'll try and write up the procedure soon and send it to you when I am done.

Thanks again to all. I said piston slap but I meant piston skirt slap / noise. I've read till my head hurts or may be the beer.....And there is a wealth of knowledge in here. And everything I'm seeing and hearing seems to be a "common" issue. There is even a sound file that sounds like my issue. I just did not want to wait to long after buying it to bitch at the dealership. Cooked fish at the church today and afterward me and wife put about 70 miles on her, I was still analyzing the sound instead of enjoying the road... I would love to find the previous owner and talk to them. And it does get more pronounced with low r's or slight lugging.

Engine noises are confusing and trying to determine what is normal and what is a symptom of a problem down the road can be frustrating, especially trying to describe it to folks on a forum.. pre-detonation (spark knock) is probably the most common, and can be related to a lot of different situations. Carbon build-up is usually the cause unless an ignition part is failing. I would start with insuring that the combustion chambers and valves are cleaned up first and then go from there if needed...my .00002.......
