Went to a Harley Demo Ride yesterday... 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I went to a Harley Demo Ride yesterday. I rode a Stock Ultra Classic , a Fat Bob, A CVO Street Glide, and a CVO Ultra Classic. I have to say they were all great bikes but the Fat Bob just shook too much to be fun. The stock ultra was a sweet ride and a wonderful seat but like the power that my Road Star was better! The CVO street glide was a close 2nd but hard to tell with the slow ride the factory guys kept us on. But I really liked the CVO ultra Classic. Handled great for a bike that heavy...Good power (110 ci) great Seat and back rest..stereo worked great...and the brakes were to die for!

I will keep the Rodie....but if I could ever swing a CVO Ultra I would in a minute!
Here is the CVO Ultra

And the StreetGlide

There's just something about a fixed fairing that seems wrong.

If I had to pick an HD to ride instead of my Star it would be a Heritage Classic instead of the Ultra because of the rigid look of the Heritage soft-tail.

I've already come to the conclusion that if/when I'm ready to get road-sofa it's going to be one of the new Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyagers. Nice big V-twin putting out 89hp and 108ft-lbs, fuel injection, water cooled, frame-mounted fairing, 6-speed transmission, and about $8k less than the Ultra Classic.

Figure by the time I'm ready for one I'll be able to afford a nice used one.

Not going to lie. I rented a Ultra last weekend. Its quite a bike, handled amazingly. Not near the power of a RS, but the 6th gear was such an improvment and as we all know would be a nice touch on the RS. I was suprized on some of the accessories, as far as quality. The seat had already ripped from wear and some of the compartment covers were cheaply made, but all in all impressive machine. Just Harley priced. Not to hijack but, Anybody ever rode a Venture or the Kawi touring bike?

I believe anytime you come from a cruiser, especially one without a windshield and go to a touring bike you will notice a more sluggish feeling in the power. The HD and RS are very similar in HP and torque, but I know in my own experience with roadie, when I rode it without the Silverado windshield it felt much quicker and more agile that with it. And when I added the fairing and tour pack it made the bike feel even more sluggish. Hard to compare the two when the motors are so similar but the weight and wind resistance are not. That being said if you ride one of the new Goldwings the power will blow your mind. Full dresser or not.

Shocker, I went from a Road* to a venture and very glad I did. It takes a little getting used to because of the different power band. The venture is not a V-Twin its a V-4. The power band is between 5 grand and 7500 rpms. I can tell you from experience there isn't many V-twins that will keep up with a properly riden venture. With a few mods I am running a little over 100 hp. This thing will wind out and loves the high rpm's.
The engine size fools alot of people, but with 2 more cyclinders its a power house.

The ride is so smooth you will be cruising at 80 thinking your doing 60.

I would say the venture is between a ultra and a wing. You can keep up but not out run a wing, but it will smoke a ultra hands down, better warranty, more power and about 8 grand cheaper than the overpriced ultra.

Stock the ultra will out handle the venture, but for about $300 you can lower the venture and it will handle as good as the pre 09 models. I haven't riden the 09's so I can't compare it to the ventures handling.

I picked up a 03, which was lowered with a Dyna ignition with 14000 miles for $9,000.

If you are wanting a true touring bike with the classic looks you can't go wrong with the venture.

Gas mileage is not as good as the ultra, but the 25 more ponies is worth it. I average 40-45mpg.
