Salt 2 Years, 8 Months ago
I just returned from a trip after spending a few days on the coast. I was surprised at just how quickly the salt air can start to cause discoloration on some the parts on the bike. I spent a couple hours cleaning and waxing the bike and think I have all the salt off the bike at this point. For those that live on the coast, are there any places I need to pay close attention to that I may have missed? I already removed the windshield and cleaned those unaccessible areas and rinsed under the fenders and the underside of the bike.

Thanks.

I'm not on the coast, I'm up north and I've been out on salted roads. The big thing is to dilute the salt to nothing, lot's of water, rinse it off, spray the water up and down, and then the last rinse, go from bottom up, front to the back. Then when you have it totally rinsed off, dry it by hand right away.

I live and ride on the coast a lot. The secret is to wash the bike often and keep it garaged.

Just my two cents. RINSE RINSE RINSE, lots of water and when you are pretty sure you have all the salt off use a leaf blower to blow it dry, then for good measure rinse once more, and blow dry again, saves alot of polishing and wiping down and gets in those little places your fingers can't.

Sounds like I took the right steps. I rinsed the heck out of the bike before and after washing the bike. I love the coast and smell of the ocean, but am glad I don't have to deal with the work it would take to maintain a bike or vehicle exposed to those harsh conditions.

Some years it takes forever for all the salt to rinse off the roads up here. I know a lot of guys with big $$ bikes won't even take them out until it's all gone. Not ME! I'm going to Ride it! You can always wash it or replace it.

I think a bike is a lot like a bottle of wine (you buy it to drink, not save) So I ride!
