OIl level - side cover removal 2 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|

Hey guys,
I have to ask a couple of newbie questions.
When checking the oil should the stick be threaded
in or just resting on the threads ? Also if reading
in the middle of the xxxx area is that 1/2 qt low ?
(Sorry I have no owners annual)
Also how do you get the side covers off ? I took of the
visable side bolts but don't know how to get to the
bolt that attaches the right and left sides together.
Thanks,
Chris

It should be sitting on the threads. Be aware though, if you are checking your oil, do it at the end of the ride. Let the bike sit for about 5 minutes, put something under the side stand to make it almost straight up and check it with the cap sitting on top of the threads. Unless the oil doesn't show at all in the crosshatch, do NOT add any.
This is the only way the dipstick is even fairly accurate.
I usually change mine and don't even bother checking it more than once or twice between changes, it doesn't use a drop.

Jimbo is right but I would ck more often till you see if you have any
oil useage. and the side cover has two ruber gromets between the two
side you just pull straght out.

Left side pulls off as Partime stated, but the right side has another small bolt that will also need to be removed, It's a bit hard to see, but you'll find it once the left is off....

IGNORE THE DIPSTICK, PERIOD!
Dipstick is NOT an accurate indicator of engine oil level, regardless of what Yamaha says or what procedure they want you to endure to try and determine the level of oil.
So, how does one determine the level of oil in our bikes? If you're not leaking it, burning it or putting a straw down the fill pipe and drinking it yourself, you've got the same amount of oil you put in it when you changed the oil the last time. And if you've been reading this forum for any length of time you know that the proper amount is 4 quarts...no more, no less.
Unlike the money in my wallet which seems to evaporate for no reason, the oil in the bike should be what you put in it.
And Flashback is right on the side cover. Just be careful when removing it because if that nut comes loose and falls out, it's a bear to locate and replace.

While I disagree with mark7 about not using the dipstick, because it is a useful tool in determining if your burning oil, I agree with the 4 quarts rule.

The dipstick doesn't register your oil level consistently no matter what/when you check it. Like Mark7 said, if it isn't leaking or burning out your pipes, what you put in last is still there. I've never found it useful on this scoot.

Mine's been consistent the last 5 times I checked it. Return to idle for 30 seconds (while I put the atv jack under it and level the bike), then shutting it off and checking it 2.5 minutes later. Spot on every time. So far.

Some one posted this link on another thread and I thought that it may be useful here. If you did not change the oil yourself or if something does drip, here is a way to check it, even if it is a ball park, it seems to be fairly consistent for me.

Okay,
Pulled on the left and I saw the rubber grommet on the
side, seems that it is hung up in the front where the
left and right come together. Must have not pulled
hard enough. Didn't want to break a tab or something.
Think I'll just change the oil so I can get a good
initial reading. The guy I got the bike from said
he has been using Mobil 1 V twin synthetic.
Any comments on this oil? I usually run what was
in it. I did run Rotella 5w-40 synthetic in my Max
after reading a pretty in depth article on oils.
Here is the link if anyone is interested.
