K&N filter Question 5 Years, 1 Month ago
How often do you guys clean and reoil your K&N filters?
I saw a K&N post that you can let the filter get very dirty and it
should still work great.I`ve cleaned my twice in the last 10,000
miles.the first time I know I over oiled it.the second time I was
very careful and let it wick real good with a light oiling.
It`s starting to look alittle black at the front,a little lighter in
color at the top and still has a nice pinkish red color on the bottom.

10,000 is too soon but it depends on the condition of the filter. It should be 'dirty' as it's the dirt that filters out the dirt.

I see the same thing on mine. The leading edge is blacker than the front at it facing the direction of major air flow.

But it should not be so dirty that it prevents the air from passing through. The bike will richen up a little as the filter becomes more effective. Once it's past it's effectiveness then you'll notice the bike running much richer.

Sorry I can't give you a black and white answer but that's the way life is.

One thing you've already noticed ..... you don't need a lot of oil. The oil is only used to capture the dirt.

Same as BeefCake; I clean and reoil during my winter maintenance then usually forget about it unless I ride in really dirty/dusty conditions or alot of rain.
