Hey all, Just jumping in after reading this thread as I will be doing a full cleaning and inspection this weekend like Surveywaters.

After taking off the pipes and cleaning out the valves, is it in my best interest to re attach the pipes before starting?

I have never taken pipes off before so don't know if you can start the bike with the pipes off. I understand it will be ver loud(had a car with a leaking manifold before) but is it harmful for the bike to run without the pipes on.

I ask because I plan on doing alot of work to her, but I also have no idea where or when I will stop, ha ha Guess it depends on how things look as I had a Carb/SVS issue recently but quick tune up and seafoam temp cured it.

Thanks ahead of time.

Running the bike without the pipes is NOT a good idea. The engine needs a certain amount of back pressure PLUS you expose the hot exaust valves to cold air. This could create some very big problems.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Wanted to make sure either way. More of a convenience factor since I might do some tail work as well and reall don't know how much I will go into this. Could be a couple weekends, and I also could keep the whole damn thing torn apart all winter, ha ha

Who knows. But one thing I do know is I will most likely be asking you all alot of questions if I see anything out of the ordinary. (Fingers crossed)

Surveywater or anone here, You mentioned you took off the exhaust and had some carbon build up.

How did you get rid of it? Did you just spray with a cleaner(deep creek or like) and let it set or is there another way to clean it besides pulling the whole thing apart.

I'm on a limb here, kinda decent amount of build up and sprayed it down.

Just seeing what you did. I got the carb cleaned out with deep creek and the engine is sounding better. Some smoking, but not as bad as when I did it in September after the rear plugs died.

However never touched the exhaust part before

I went to Curt's site (you can find the link above his signature pic) He has the SVS cleanup layed out step by step and if you need help he is great! But if you have the build up you need to get your jetting right or it will happen again!!

Great Thanks,

WOW, silly me. I did got to Curts site the first time I did this.

I totall forgot he talked about taking the pipes off at the time. Thanks,

Curt, you as well as several others(Doc, BB and whoever I have not mentioned) have pin pointed everything for me on my bike.

I have learned so much in a matter of a couple months.

She is running so much better then when I first rode her, but the spring will be insane.
