that's the rear, yes, stock ignition box.
the tip is grey but there is also alot of black crust underneath

Well , those look lean. At least from the picture....they sure aren't sooty. That's why viewing the plugs are so vital. You might look for trash in the bowl or air leaks (that's more likely..). You have heard of using incense smoke to find leaks , right? Look in all the areas I mentioned. It can be a headache , but you will figure it out. BB

been all ovr with an incense stick, no apparent leaks at the carb, carb to manifold, manifold, manifold to head, exhaust port, seem in pipes

Incense stick on the manifold and carb area isn't going to tell you much it works good for exhaust leaks. They spraying WD40 or use a spray bottle with water on the manifold and carb area. If you have a leak you will notice a change in engine rpms.
