Turning Over, but no fire! 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Greetings all. After a year and a half, I am almost done with my bobber build. I have had the tranny recall done during the process so I have fresh rings and gaskets--the motore was redone by a qualified and trusted mechanic. I also replaced the front end with a DNA Sringer, so I had to go with HD custom drag bars with HD switches. I switched out the entire front end with HD parts and electrics.

I put it all back together, followed the installation instructions StoneColdStar gave me for the badlands singal module (which were great, very easy to follow), and checked all fuses and lines at least a dozen times. The bike turns over, all indicators work, and I am getting gas to the carb. What I am not getting is spark. I pulled all the spark plug wires and did the trusty screw driver test to see if get a spark: Nope! I even took a spark plug out and hit the ignition to see if there was spark in the gap: Nope!

The wires going into the coils are both pushing hot (I didn't mix them up and ground any during the rebuild). But I am not getting fire at the spark plug. Could the coils be bad? Any ideas?

Thanks
Col

Seems like you're looking at either coils, plug wires or the plugs themselves. Do you have a spare set of plugs to try? Then I'd go for the plug wires, and last the coils. My $.02.

The red wires going to the coils are hot. The other 2 are the signal from the ignition module. If your getting signal from the module, see if it's pulsing while cranking. If not, it could be your pick up coil, decompression coil or connectors in between

Have you checked all you fuses? That would be the firat thing I looked at. I always try go for from the easy stuff to the hard. Some times it work out in my favor and some times not.

The plugs are new and I check the fuses each time I try a new fix with the problem. I think I have eliminated both of these as the problem. I have not tried vwtch0's suggestion. Gues I'll start the morning with that.

Thanks for the input. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

check the wires from the pick up and make sure you are getting signal to the ignition module. no signal no spark

I still have not checked the ingition module. I have to wait for the battery to charge...AGAIN. I may be able to check it tomorrow. I hope the module is not pulsing the signal. That'd make it an easy fix. Otherwise....not in the mood for breaking all the wires down with a multi-meter.

I have a spare ignition module that I could part with, I am going to switch to a dyna 3000 soon as part of my upgrades this winter. I have a 1600 that I put a 1700 module in for a while then took out.

Did you change the key system for the bike? I'm running into a similar problem with my bike and do not believe the coils have gone bad. I did change my key system and another 'guru' mentioned requiring a resistor to properly fire the ignition module. I'm going to switch back to the stock key system and fingers crossed this will return the fire to the ignition.
