With all the technology out there, I know they could come up with something that could determine when a cell phone is traveling over a certain speed, (walking), and render the damn thing useless at any driving speed. Although, there should be a 911 override. Only emergency calls can be made at driving speeds.

Man, this has to be my biggest peeve. Driving while on the phone is rampant here, my estimate is one in 20 cars (trucks, buses, police cars, ambulances - seen em all on the phone). I should begin wearing a full face helmet because I am bound to get punched sooner or later. I always yell out "Hang up and drive, You ...Idiot!" with the usual expletive placed before Idiot. But I feel I have the right to complain. Two very close calls with cell phone drivers. One when I was crossing a street in a crosswalk, fully controlled with traffic stopped both ways. She came through, narrowly missed me, and never once even touched the brake pedal. She never saw a thing, and to this day likely has no idea how close she came to killing a person. Society should not have to pass legislation when simple common sense should be sufficient. But I guess we need a law to protect the rest of us. Our Provincial Government is promising such a law this year, and it can't come too soon. On my Roadie, the biggest fear I now have is being hit by a cell phone driver/talker. Sure makes me keep my eyes peeled.

While I will agree that those who use cell phones when driving is so very dangerous, no law will change that. We have laws for every damn thing in the book, people still drink and drive, drink and ride (you know who you are) and how about speeding or wearing a stupid seat belt? When was the last time you came to a complete stop at a stop sign? We are all guilty of infractions to various laws. One to make it illegal to talk on a phone while driving will never pass.

Here's why; what about passengers? They can still use a cell phone, what about volunteer firemen who need to get a call at "Any time" so they can save our butts. There are so many GOOD things that being able to use a cell phone while driving gives us that no law will ever make it.

Should those who are driving dangerously while texting get off free? NO! Every state right now has a law that allows officers to pull over and ticket drivers for "Inattentive" driving. Let's push them to make that a bigger fine and teach them a lesson.

My $.02 cents worth BTW, this is a BIG can of worms, let's keep it civil please.

You're exactly right. First, you can't legislate brains. Second, each of us has a little different version of what we think is common sense. (Helmet laws, for instance)

NC just passed a law about texting and driving. About the only thng it's likely to do is help some lawyers get bigger settlements since there's a record of your texting that would match up with the time of the wreck.

But, even if all of the cellphones magically dissapeared, there are any number of things that we all do to take our attention off the road. From selecting songs on the iPOD to turning around to tell your kids to "shut up" to reaching for that french fry that just dropped in your lap, there is no way we're ever going to be able to legislate safe driving.

Just, please, pay attention out there!!!!

Stay safe.

No arguement here. Don't know if it's so much stupidity as it is irresponsibility. Technology has enhanced our lives. Unfortunately it also has consequences. Being aware of the responsibilities that come with it evades a lot of (over all young) people. Short of passing more laws what can you do? We just have to continue riding like everyone is out to get us and pray we make it to tomorrow. Cell phones are a fact of life. So's stupidity and irresponsibility.

This is the sad part of that news article:

Greg Zaffke of Chicago, whose mother, Anita, was killed in May when a vehicle rear-ended her motorcycle at 50 mph. The driver had been painting her finger nails at the time of the crash.

I think you all said what we all pretty much feel. The order of natural selection was looking for that crotch rocket rider and a horn got in the way

I agree, please no more new laws. The gov't regulates too much as it is. And even if there was some kind of law, that doesn't change common since and good judgement.

Think about it, where does it stop. Next think you know, they are going to start bashing use for texting while riding are bikes.
