Spotlight Problem! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
OK I need some help from the all knowing minds here, I recently installed Spotlights on the bike and the problem I am having is that when I turn them on they pop the the headlamp fuse and I lose all my lights. If I replace the fuse and leave them off, no problem. I followed the instructions to the tee and ran the Red wire on the unit to that red wire with the yellow stripe in the wire bunch. I have checked the grounds and have good grounds. If I unplug the turn signals completely the spotlights will stay on, if I start reconnecting the signal wires they will stay on until I plug in the final wire then it will pop the fuse. I have checked that the signal wires are not pinched anywhere causing a ground but it keeps popping the fuse. Can anyone offer any words of wisdom?

You have to use a Relay fired From either the high or low beam wire , and a New Fused 16 ga wire right from the Battery to supply the Passing lights . If you add up ALL the amperages ( watts divided by voltage ) you will see why . Also there is a moment when going from High to low or vice versa when both filaments are on and that puts the Ampwerage right over the top .

Thats what I was thinking, that maybe the lamps were drawing too much off that wire causing the fuse to blow. The power wire that comes with the kit has an in line fuse so would running that wire directly to the battery solve that problem? Little ignant about electrical stuff!

GOOSE915,

I had a similar problem with mine. After a lot of frustrating attempts to find the problem, I checked the passing light switch(the one on the passing light bucket). I found one of the wire on the switch was loose and touching the bucket thus grounding out, and blowing my 15amp fuse. I soldered that wire back on the switch and everything is fine now.
Hope this help you.

rolie

Sure that will work, but don't forget to turn them off...

Thanks for the input fellas the switch is the only thing I haven't checked so that will be next on my list.

You can run the relay off the front running light too (blue wire) this will allow spots to be on with either low or high beam. Always had mine like that.

Go with the relay solution already mentioned so you never have to worry about the possibility of losing all your lights at once. The instructions that came with the spots isn't the best way to do your wiring.
