Rear Brakes went out 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Looking for a little help here. On my ride home yesterday I lost all rear brake. The pedal goes to the bottom with no resistance other than the return spring.

I checked the lines and the fittings, and no leaks anywhere that I can see. Pads didn't just wear out over night (and have plenty left), and the cap to the master cylinder is tight, and the fluid level looks OK.

What else should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance,

look underneath where the piston enters the master and make sure when you push the pedal down the piston moves into the master cylinder

If you don't get any fluid out with the bleed nipple open then you have a worn out master cylinder seal. If you had a leak some place you would see fluid squirt out if you have fluid in the resavor.

Yep, I agree with Curt. Sounds like the cup in the M/C if you don't get fluid out the bleeder.

If it's has bean working fine and all of the sudden no brakes and no leaks ,It sounds like a bad master cyl. fluid bypassing the piston seal.

Checked the system, bled the line, reviewed for leaks, and the whole works, and nothing. As I was bleeding the line, I got a LITTLE bit of fluid out of the bleed-nipple, but not like if the master cylinder was really moving the juice. It's got to be that the fluid is just bypassing the piston/seal (or whatever the right term is) inside that master cylinder.

Checking out my factory service manual, it looks like there is a "brake master cylinder kit" available. It looks like a pretty straightforward replacement. Is there something I'm still missing? I might be totally spoiled, but I can't imagine not riding this weekend, and the weather only hit 90 degrees today, and should be beautiful!

Is there an aftermarket CHROME master cylinder (there HAS to be)...maybe a chance to "upgrade" as the wife has started to call it!!

Any suggestions?

I've rebuilt many front master cylinders , never had the need to rebuild one for a rear system , but I'm sure it's similar. If your local dealer has one in stock (doubtful ) , it's only a 2-3 hour repair , start to finish. And as for an upgrade , there really isn't one short of changing to forward controls that has its own master cylinder unit. BB

This might sound a little dumb....but I lost my rear brake going down Mt. Magazine. [only the highest point between the Alleganies and the Rockies!!!] It was the little pin that the Brake pedal swivels on! Apparently the cotter pin came out and then the pin worked it's way out coming down the Mt.!! I had little or no rear brake and it took me a little while to figure out that the pin was gone!

Hellriser Custom has a chrome replacement rear M/C. Here's a link. Look about halfway down the page.
