Accident With a Bike 2 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
I just need to get this off my chest and you guys are the only ones that will understand. Coming home from work yesterday in my chevy silverado I came to a curve in the road. A 17 year old kid on like a 75-100cc dirtbike came down the hill and around the curve in my lane. He was in the center of the road. Though he jerked the handlebars at the last minute, he impacted my vehicle at a high rate of speed. Lucky I was only doing 25. It broke the spindle on my truck destroyed the fender, and headlight. But this kid was laying there on the road. They medflighted him out and I pray he's going to live. Please be careful out there on your bikes, please because not all cagers are bad. I love my bike and I love my truck but I would trade them both to fix this kids foolish mistake. Even though I did all I could and was not at fault I still feel so damn guilty so please be careful Nick

I know how you are feeling Liquid, I was in an accident a few years ago with a kid on a bike also. I was traveling down the highway in my 18 wheeler and a kid on a bike ran a stop sign and broadsided my trailer tandems. I just caught something out of the corner of my eye as I went past him and then felt the impact. To my surprise when I got back there to him he was alive and in surprisingly good shape for the accident he'd just been in. I heard from the trooper that worked the accident that he had lost an arm. I know the guilty feeling you are talking about but if it weren't your fault you just have to get past it. I will be praying for you and the teen also. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I still have visions of the young girl who unexpectedly turned her bicycle in front of my vehicle over 25 years ago. By some miracle the girl only received minor injuries despite my vehicle striking the back of her bike and tossing her into the ditch. I also was driving under the speed limit on a county road and the evasive action I took ended up taking me into the ditch and hitting head on into a concrete culvert. To this day I am super sensitive when children are present and happen to be walking or playing on a sidewalk or the side of the road. I instinctively assume a defensive driving posture anytime I see children. You never know what may happen. LE, it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Best thing for you to do is move on and remember the importance of driving safely and defensively.

Like Yakman said, don't beat yourself up over it, it was not your fault. Take it as a lesson to be more aware when you ride, and I hope the kid will be O-K...

Like others have said, don't beat yourself up it wasn't your fault.
As motorcycle riders I think being involved in an accident with a bike when in a car or truck is the worse experience in the world no matter who's fault it is.
I'm sorry you went though that but again remember it wasn't your fault.

I thank God that I've never been in an accident like that where someone got hurt real bad.
I too get real cautious when kids are around and watch them very carefully. They can do real stupid things unexpectedly.
Hope you reconcile this in your own heart, since you were not at fault. Maybe you can visit the kid in hospital just to make a connection other than at the scene.

Hang in there Nick, you got caught up in someone else's bad judgement and I know how you feel. I hope that kid does ok,but as others have said try not to beat yourself up. I know it's easier said than done and I'll say a prayer for you and that kid. Be strong Brother.
Martin.

LE,
I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Maybe it was you because someone else would have been going faster. Maybe it was you because you knew how to react when you saw him. Maybe it was you to give him another chance to live another day.
Kids need to learn to ride just like everyone else. Dirt bikes are meant for dirt, not streets, and street bikes are meant for streets, not ditches. As a Fire/EMS professional, I can tell you that this is one lucky kid if there was any kind of impact at all. The outcome could have been much worse. You did nothing wrong other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or maybe, just maybe, you were in the right place at the right time? Hope he makes a full recovery and learns from it.

Man... So sorry to hear it. As everyone else has said, it's not your fault. Maybe say a prayer for that kid or visit him in the hospital. He's very fortunate. Peace and strength to you. (Hope your truck gets fixed up, too)
