Dean,
Where in NH are ya? I have friends there and there is a Star group up there that can help you with most questions you might have. You could buy this bike and leave it the way it is and, most likely, ride it the rest of your life with only maintenance to do. We just can't seem to leave good enough alone and building our bikes is a hobby as well as the joy we get from riding. My bike has never puked, has stock coil & wires, ect and runs like a champ. If it can fit your body, you will have a great time riding one of these bikes. As far as the seat goes, you can get an old stock seat from almost any of us and have a local shop modify it to let you move back some. If you don't like the new seat, just throw your old one back on and you are out very little cash.

Ride safe, Paul

Glad ya joined............ It's all pretty much been said, The engine is practically bullet proof, The reason most of the engine mods are done, is because of the epa compliance that the factory feels a need to meet, kinda like the the old cars in the early 80's, they end up de-tuning it with all the clean air gadgets...

I have an 07 R* and with the exception of some "chrome bling" and a new seat the bike is bone stock and runs fine. I'm not a mechanic and really don't have time at this point to mess with things....I prefer to spend what little spare time I do have riding versus wrenching. Luckily the R* doesn't need a lot of tinkering to be a good ride. From a comfort perspective, the stock seat was a problem for me and caused back pain. I switched to the Ultimate seat and now I can ride the bike forever with no problems. I'm 6'2" and the way the R* fit me was one of the major reasons I purchased this bike over others....plenty of leg room. You have an extra 7" on me, so the bike will likely fit a little different, but I suspect floor board extensions will mitigate that issue.

Good luck!

I daily commute on my stock '07. No problems whatsoever. Oh, had a flat at 300 miles and plugged it myself. R* is a snap to maintain. Welcome to the club.

dyjaz - Sounds like you may have a pretty good reach on you as well. Might want to consider a different bar to streatch your arms out a bit more. After putting on my apes, I was happier than a pig in slop. I made that same backrest as a prototype, and can't bring myself to take it off. I have the same bike (2005 midnight silverado), and the only mods to the engine I've ever done was remove the AIS, and change the oil to synthetic. I switch every now and then between another set of pipes that I've got, but no changes to the carb. I don't ride every day, but when I do, I've never been let down. My riding season is just beginning here in Texas (I like cooler weather), and I have 21 days of vac. to burn before EOY, so I pan to spend a whole bunch of "alone time" with my special lady. That's right, she says everything I want to hear, puts a smile on my face, and washes away my stress.

I've got a Roadstar with 50K+ miles on it. It would have more if some a-hole didn't run over me at a light and force me to convert it from the long distance cruiser to a chopper that has taken 4 years to build. I also have 6 other bikes in my garage including the 650 and 1100 V-stars.

There is no better bike than the Roadstar. There's enough grunt from the pipes that the stupid Harley guys don't bother you. There's enough grunt from the motor that you leave them in your dust when you do twist the throttle.

The bike you are looking at already has the basic upgrades that optimize the stock motor so you're good there. Moving the boards up 3" is a must for you and your comfort as well as a backrest. The best thing about this particular model is the amount of aftermarket products available. Baron's is the #1 provider of all things Roadstar. Check out what add-ons are out there, how much they cost, and know that 99.9% of them are bolt on using a set of metric allen wrenches.

At the price you stated, you're getting the best bang for your buck. My tastes are a bit more progressive than your traditionalist, so I don't feel Star products (yamaha's accessory line) are necessary when changing things out. Staying clear of manufacturer products will keep costs low there too.

At 50k+ miles, I haven't once had a 'carb puke' problem except when I didn't put a little o-ring back in it. There was a steady leak but 25 cents later it was fixed.

DO IT, BUY THE BIKE, KNOW THAT YOU'RE GETTING THE BEST OUT THERE.

Welcome,
I have had my 99 R* Silverado for a little over 5 months now and have clocked nearly 5,000 miles. I was riding a 82 Honda Ascot 500 prior to that. All I can say is wow. I purchased mine for 5K with 11,000nmiles and bone stock. It's a torque monster. It reminds me of driving a big block Camaro back in the day. Takes very little throttle to propell you up to speed going through the gears but when you do open it up Hang On. I love it. Looking for another one to strip and customize.
