I've had a few slaps to the pavement over the years. The gloves made a lot of difference. They also help with hand fatigue.Just may 2 cents.

I always wear gloves while riding. I have summer gloves and winter gloves but there are always gloves on my hands. Long pants too. The skin is the first thing to go.

I was always glad to see boats with their bumpers hanging over the side while underway; tells me to stand clear because he is the kind of sailor who needs them full time.

Gloves: got five sets for all seasons. Just picked up two new sets at Fox Creek Leather this past month. Soft as butter and very well made.

Always wear full-finger gloves, a riding jacket, long pants, a helmet, and boots. That's just me, though.

Up here we call those "Bayliners"

I normally wear gloves unless it's just a quick trip down the block or downtown and it's nice out. I have the gloves with pads in the palms and they help with the cramping. In the winter, I wear gauntlet full leather to keep my fingers warm

I always wear full gloves. In summer I use light mountain bike type gloves with reinforced knuckles and backs. for cooler weather I have the full gauntlet leathers. I got radical and bought some black O'Neill white water paddling neoprene gloves for the rain. Most excellent and they look like sharkskin.

Always wear either fingerless or full. Got a nice curved tan line on the back of my hand to prove it.

I gave up my nice fingerless gloves when I realized just how much I love my fingers. I won't go 3 feet without my full fingered Leather gloves, but to each his own
