Use a Garmin 255W on mine with a RAM mount. Ball mount stays on bike while swivel mount and gps unit goes with me when not being used. Nice setup.

I am running a Garmin 260W on my R*. I found a billet mount on ebay that is clamped to the bars between my risers dead center. It has a post with a 17mm brass ball on the end that the garmin cradel pops onto. It's a slick little mount and is all polished and looks good. I ran the power cord down the backbone under my tank and made a cigarette lighter adaptor that connects to my Battery Tender pigtail under the seat to plug into. I was a little concerned at first about the unit popping off the mount but it doesn't move a bit even on the rough roads. Running a GPS when wandering aroud the back roads has been great. I agree, the bike specific GPS was way too expensive for me and I already had the Garmin. I will try and post photos sometime this weekend.

Roadstarnewbie2009, I would like to see your gps mount. I like the idea of the center mount. Post brand and model info when you can. Pics would be great too.

I got a great deal on a TOMTOM ONE 3rd Edition on Ebay I think they marked the price wrong on the buy it now cause I only paid like 25 or 30 bucks if I remember correctly, you can even change the icon to a motorcycle if that kind of thing matters to you, just stumbled on that when I was playing around with it also you can change the voice on it, there are numerous free ones available when you go online with the gps plugged into your home pc.

you can get a plastic cover for the gps at the following link
http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=136

I bought my handlebar mount here http://www.slam1prod.net/. With that mount I just took mount that came with the gps and pop rivetted it to the plate on the chrome mount up high enough so I could also put the remote for my shark radio on the same mount.

Here is a pic with them mounted.

I am using a garmin 60csx it is water proof and very simple to use. It is a little pricey. I had a Magellan maestro in a aqua box it seemed to get glitchy on long rides. I really like the garmin they do have less expensive models if you don't care about color. I like the fact I can use it for hunting boating hikes and navigation. It is loaded with nice features like bank find hotels and much much more. But the best feature is the TFT screen no shade needed on sunny days you can always see the screen.

I have a Tom Tom GPS (not the bike one) and I have it on a RAM mount with a DC plug, Normally it sits in my saddlebag but if I get lost, or need to find an address, I pull it out and plug it in. Not really good in bright sunlight. I do have a motorcycle as the vehicle Icon I do not use it in the rain, and Tom Tom told me that having it on the MC will or has voided it's warranty, I told them that's OK, it's 3 years old already

Re:auto gps on a bike 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I have not had any vibration problems, the remote I put on with double sided 3M tape, I have ridden in a few rain storms and not had any problems, but I did get in one really bad downpoor and took the gps off and slid it in my vest pocket just to be safe.

Thanks for the compliment.

Added a pic of the mount that I took apart... The bracket that came with the gps was a suction cup mount for a car so I ordered an extra one so the gps moves easily from car to bike, and when I took it apart for mounting on the bike the only option that I found for mounting that I was comfortable with (even though I got a great deal) still didn't want to take a chance on seeing it bouncing down the road in my rear view. Removed the two small screws to remove the back cover, popped the ball of the neck out and then cut the four tabs off the back and drilled the holes in for the rivets.
