The problem with going with a larger rear tire is the rim squeezes the tire making a "fat tire" seem skinny so the advise is 160 is the largest you can go with no mods. Now Iowaroadie has gone 180 so with no mods and that is the first I've heard of that.

Just to confuse things a bit, not all 180's (or any other size for that matter) are created equal..seems different manufacturers have a different formula for determining the ratio. I have a slipstone excedra 180 that barely fits. you can't get your little finger between the tire and the subframe, and it's even closer at the brake stay. I can't say for sure if the PO did any mods, but if he did, he did a darn good job, cause nothing looks or feels as if it has been ground off... I have the stock wheel so I assume that is the reason it fits, if I had a 5" wheel, it would probably allow the tire to rub..

Do a search on You tube on Darkside tires, Or Google Or It's a traditional Car Tire on a Bike. You get 30K miles on one. 4 times the life of a good MC tire.

Wheels (rims) are made for a certain width of tire. If you exceed the recommended size range (max and min) the tire does not 'sit' right.

A 180 is too wide for the stock rear rim, you need to go to at least a 5" wheel to properly accommodate that size tire.

In addition ..... as previously posted ..... as you put a wider tire on the stock rim, the tire is 'squeezed' and so it looks narrow than it would appear on a proper sized wheel.

I've been using the Avon 180 on my 2000 for three tire changes and have gotten great results. Avon just changed the model name to Cobra.

I recently installed new tires on my 01.. went with the ME 880 x 150 and just to add to what was already stated,

when going bigger it's squeezes the tire on the rim at the bead and it rounds the tire so we get less rubber contacting the roadway, even going with the 160 it doesn't make that much difference.
