New R*, what speed? 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Just moved from a BMW 1200 GSA to a new '09 R* Silverado, TOTALLY different ride! I absolutely love it. I have a couple of questions I hope you guys can help me with.

1) What is minimum speed for 5th gear on level road? At 45 to 50, it seems to be lugging to me. Of course the Beemer was geared totally differently. The Yamaha manual says upshift 4th to 5th at 31 mph!
That's an impossibility! The engine would barely turn over at that speed.

2) When I apply the front brake, the calipers make a loud buzzing sound against the rotors (seems like mainly the right rotor) Is this normal, or should I have the dealer look at it?

Thanx for any help you can provide!

I would not shift into 5th until around 60-65.
As for the brake noise. If it has holes drilled in the rotor it will cause a noise like your describing which is normal.

kilowatt. Fifth gear is really an overdrive gear. I hit mine around 60+ (on a 32T pulley). You are lugging a bit at 45-50. These bikes like to be pushed through the gears before you shift up.

Loud buzzing on the front brake, if it's reasonably low, is normal. If it sounds excessively loud to you, you might want to have the pads/calipers checked to make sure they're working properly. You're on warranty so it wouldn't hurt. Some buzzing is normal on these big boys.

Hi Kilowatt,

Yeah, totally ignore Yamaha's suggested shift point. We'd all love to talk to the guy who decided that should be in the manual! I'm on an '07, not fuel injected, but pretty much the same beast, and the more I ride it the more it feels like I should just rev it. I typically don't use 5th until 60mph or so. Maybe just putting with a light load I'll use 5th a little slower, but certainly not below 50mph.

The brakes will get quieter with time. They are old sport bike brakes, off the old R1 I believe. Anyway, you'll always hear them a bit, but yeah they will quiet down.

It's a "special" bike with a lot of "special" noises

Welcome to the Clinic!

Mike

5th gear at 55 mph-60 mph here. Although, you should be able to hit 70 mph in 4th with ease. And yes, the sounds you hear are just one of the many sounds you will learn to recognize.

I found that my R* luggs really badly unless I am up to at least 55. I also noticed that buzzing but didn't kow where it was coming from. Glad you asked.

I have heard that noise on every bike I have had with front disc brakes that are not solid. Including mountain bikes. I have it on my roadstar and I also hear it on my rear brakes from time to time.

I don't hit 5th until I'm at my cruising speed.

As far as what they say for shifting THROW THE BOOK OUT! I have an 03 with 60,000 miles of which I have put on 53,000. My bike has a tachometer, at 2000 RPM it does 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 going through the gears. The engine absolutely loves it between 2000 & 3000, which will have you between 60 & 90 MPH in 5th gear.

Thanks guys! I knew the bike didn't seem happy at 45 to 50 in 5th gear. As far as the front brakes go, they're really buzzy. I'll watch 'em and contact the dealer if there's a problem. Also, I read in the forum about "roadstar knock" so i'm not concerned about all the engine noise. It is, after all, a ohv engine with pushrods! All in all, I'm very pleased with this "torque monster"! (wouldn't trade it for TWO Beemers!) Again, thanks for all the advice!
