#233161 seminole bob (User) Expert Boarder Posts: 501 Fork oil 2 Years, 3 Months ago   I'm getting ready to change fork oil on my 06 for the first time. I have 45,000 miles so i guess it's time. Do i need to flush the forks after draining the oil? If yes what would be good to use to flush with? Also should i go back with the 5 or 7 wt. oil. I have done my forks three times. I have 83,500 miles on her. Folling is how I have done my forks: Friday: take the forks apart and let them drain. Sunday: put the forks back together. Prefer to use Red Line Fork Oil in 10 weight. Hope this helps. Thanks I'm getting ready to do my forks for the first time too, figure it need to get done at 106k miles. lol. And while I'm there, gonna do new head bearings, just because. Just so you know, there are no drain screws on these forks. I'm also going to use tranny fluid (equil. to 10wt), since my seals are good, not going to dismantle the forks, just dump, will use an extra qt of tranny fluid to flush and clean. You have to pull off the front wheel to access the plugs through the bottom of the forks. That is the cartridge cylinder bolt, though some have used it for draining, these forks do not have drains. proper way is to dump the oil from the top. There's the possibility going this route to drain that when tightening, the cartridge cylinder can spin on ya, and won't tighten, then you'll have to start all again. Even my old 89 Vmax had drain plugs. Erbman is right though if those are only the damper rod bolts and you loosen them you may have a hard time tightening them back up if they spin. Then you'll have to buy or build a tool to hold the rod while you tighten them. The stinking engineers just won't build stuff easily serviced by the layman. Popping in the turns. Guess i will make a saturday project and get the oil changed. Will go with the 10 wt. thanks.
