black smoke when starting 2 Years, 3 Months ago

I am stumped on this problem. My bike runs great when its warmed up. Probably like everyone else's during the first 10 minutes during warm up, however turn it off and wait a few minutes or more and rarely will it fire right up. It will crank for 4 or 5 seconds then with the throttle opened it will start puffing out a black smoke with a smell of gas. I have a stock pilot jet(35) I have tried pms screw from 2 to 3.5 turns out with no changes to starting. Mods are BAK, 2 into 1 pipe, Ais removal, cannister reomoval. I am now wondering if I might have a fuel problem due to disconecting of my Calif. smog stuff .One other thing I did when putting in the Baron jet kit was to adjust my float. I used the aligning the flat part of the float with the mid point of the tower as described in one of the links found here on the forum. What to check next? http://roadstarclinic.com/components/com_fireboard/template/rsc3/images/english/emoticons/sad.png

Far from an expert on this but it kinda sounds like you're somehow too rich in the mix. If I had to hazard a guess I'd double check the float level and make sure the float valve ain't sticking. Did you use all the recommended jets from the kit or ? I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable carb experts will help you through. Sorry I couldn't help but I'm still learning also. BTW

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have already clearanced the choke knob. I do have a good gap behind it whens its off. Should the accelorator pump be squirtin as soon as the throttle is beginning to open. It looks like its as soon as the slide goes up the pump starts adding fuel.

You shouldn't be twisting the throttle while starting. All I do is pull the choke and hit the button. If you're twisting the throttle in addition to the choke... You're putting in a lot of fuel, Which will cause the bike to smell strong of gas and put black smoke out the pipes. Even after shutting the bike down after warm-up, you will occasionally need the choke to re-start. Just my 2¢

I will give starting a try without any throttle. Maybe I have a happy right hand at start up and never realized it!

After trying so many different carb adjustments I looked into the hoses that connect to the carb, especially the vent tube that comes off the upper part of the carb that goes to the surge tank. I found that where I removed the carbon canister line that came off the bottom of the surge tank I had plugged that port. Well the canister vented to the atmosphere, so I removed the plug from the surge tank and now the engine starts without any problems or black smoke. I think I had essentially plugged the vent line that needs to be able to vent. This is a 2004 California roadie and there is not much information about how to remove the smog stuff. I hope that this can help out someone else who might have these sort of problems. I now have it set with the needle on the 4th groove no washer under the stock spacer, and PMS at 2.5. running great! I love my roadie now.
