Synthet Oil, when to make the swap? 2 Years, 7 Months ago
My R* is a 2009 with about 400 miles! Had it about 2 weeks, and if the weather co-operates here in southwest Alabama, I'll be ready for the 600 mile service next week. Would it be appropriate to go to synthetic at the first oil change? On by previous bike (BMW) the recommendation was to not switch to synthetic before about 10K.

I don't really think it makes a diff. Hd's I hear now come with syn. new I did mine at 1k, but that was because I bought the bike with that mileage 5yrs ago, now at 106k, and I use auto syn mobil 1 15/50

I switched over at 600 miles to Yamaha 15-50 full syn. At 4000 miles, I switched over to Amsoil 20-50 syn. I now have alittle over 8000 miles on the bike (2006 RS). No regrets. I hope you enjoy your Road Star as much as I am enjoying mine.

1000 mile should be good but you can go at 600 the break in is supposed to be 600. I run Amsoil 20/50 and decided to switch to Mobil 1 to try and save a little money. The top end started to get really noisy so I switched back to Amsoil and all is good now. If you switch just pick one and stay with it. As for the break in I rode it from 0 miles just like I intended to ride it from then on.

The automobile Mobil 1 15/50? How does that work for you? Any clutch slippage? I thought that any friction modifiers were bad news on our clutches?

The Mobil 1 20/50 I use has no friction modifiers in it. None of the 15/50 the others use does either. It's good stuff. But like Curt said, not every scoot likes it as much as some of the other good brands out there (RP, Amsoil, etc.). Part of the fun of experimenting.

Like I said, been running it for most of the 105k miles, tried the others too, well 3 others, sticking with this. I have yet to see any syn oil to a 50w have the friction modifiers. seen to 40 and 30w with the modifiers tho.

Mobil 1 15w-50 does not have friction modifiers... can be bought in a 5 qt jug at Wal*Mart. I get my oil at WallyWorld, but I buy the Shell Rotella T 5w-40 Syn. It's already pre-packaged in 4 qt jugs. Last time I checked the Shell Answer Man site, it was bike recommended, even if it didn't say so on the container.

Oh, and by 600 miles, break-in should be finished, and you should be good to go with a syn oil.

Some guys like the Mobil 1 or Amsoil, & they are great oils, I've been using Shell Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 diesel oil in every motorcycle I've owned, including my '00 Roadie, for the last 7 years & love it. I chose it because it's the cheapest full synthetic oil you can buy, it works wonderfully in a non-catalyst motorcycle engine (better than car-oils), it comes in 1 gallon bottles & you can get it at any Wal-Mart or truck stop if you need to top-off while traveling.
