HSR Purchase advice . 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I have decided to Bite the Bullet and go to the HSR 42 . There are tons of options out there , Speedstar ( as low as $405 US on one site ) MAX air starting at $340 plus all extras to make it fit including Jetting and new Cables ( not sure why ) for around $475 , New Harley Easy Kits off Ebay around $290 ( nothing in the kit useable by us including Jetting ) so would have to buy Jet Kit and retrofit Cables somehow . IM thinking USED( at least sight unseen ) is NOT a good idea as you dont know how many times Backfires thru Carb may have occured and how much damage that could cause to the Slide etc..........
Looking for opininions on the most cost effective and Smartest way to go here from those who have already done it !
Thanks in advance .

Check this thread over the next day and there will be a few folks commenting.

The speedstar is setup to use a fuel pump, but can be changed to go pumpless. Don't know about the MaxAir. The Harley kits use Harley cables ends and will require switching out your throttle cables to accommodate.

We should start a post that lists everything required to change over to a HSR 42, both the Speedstar and Harley versions, and base jetting to start with. I know I will be looking for the same info when my carb comes in.

Jamie,

We really need an article about it here on the Clinic. Maybe you could start a thread about this subject and ask folks only to post if they have some experience to add. That could be recompiled later into an article for our tech tips section.

There are a lot of variations out there.

Boy Gram there is Right side , left side and speed star carb itself is the same so I'm told.

1.)You would need a pull cable for sure, push is a safety device

2.)Decide if you want a TPS or VOES or wing it.

3.) Choke cable as I understand they don't come with one.

4.) Yost tube if you want it not a must have but I like it.

5.)Polished or you polish

6.) Pingle or not to get a hi flo filter

7.)Trim the stock intake nubs to seat flat

You can get the plain jane 42hsr, lose the fuel pump, uses same main jets as stock carb (I prefer mikuni jets, since it is a mikuni carb) only need pull cable, can mod cable end by opening it a bit to fit stock, might need a spacer between carb body and cable brkt to take up some slack. just have to route stock throttle cable a hair different, on the upper tube where the first clip is, don't slip it into there, gives a bit more play since cable has to come in from the side. 42 stock pilot is fine, comes w/160 main. stock #97 needle w/clip 3rd groove, #70 pump nozzle. have on hand 165, 170, get the #98 needle, and # 50 pump nozzle, Go to Mikuni site and read the Tuning manual.

Suggest use with ported manifold too, if using the stock manifold, shave the 2 stock carb centering nibs off, this will allow for a flatter seating for the 42. Also if using stock manifold clamp, take out the spacer thats on the screw, it's there to prevent over tightening, on the 42 the spigot is a smaller diameter, so spacer needs to go.

also have options for:
VOESm mod.....switches between CT and WOT curves by vacuum, basically an on off sw.
TPS mod, highly recommended, better than the VOES mod, better acceleration from a stop, smoother low end, better city mpg
Yost Power tube, helps to better atomize the gas, helps in all ckts, more in mid to wot
recommended dyna3k
also options for air kits under 100bucks that I have found.

This is such a better carb, easier to tune for performance or economy, better performance, I'm quite familiar with this carb,

We could just make this the official thread and then make a tech article out of it. It is already off to a good start. So long as it is okay with sailrider.

Re:HSR Purchase advice . 2 Years, 3 Months ago
This is from an earlier post by erbman:
160 main w/Yost power tube
25 pilot......1.75 turns out pilot screw
#98 needle clip 2nd groove
#50 pump nozzle
TPS mod
Nemesis manifold (ZERO LEAKS, VERY IMPORTANT)
RH Dooleys
K&N RC-2000 filter fabbed brkts to fit, will be going to their marine filter which is also 4 x 7 but 1 inch wider
Dyna3k 5krpm 34A

had a 165 but WOT AFR was way rich at 11.6, hence the 160, have not done diagnostics (AFR) with the 160
Cruise at 14afr (65mph)

And more stuff:
The tapers are all the same, the difference is the straight portion of the needle, that is the portion just below the grooves that effects from idle to 1/4 throttle (cruise speed) . I got mine from Bulldog, I believe what he did to mod the cable brkt was to spread it open a bit for our cable end to fit, he also used a spacer to move the brkt about a half-inch away from the carb body compared to the way it comes stock. One issue with out stock cable is the bend at the end of cable since it will now connect from the side, all I did was not to route the cable thru the 1st guide on the frame tube, this allowed enough flex without binding to come in from the side. Basically there are 2 HD models, one for the sportsters, and one for their big twins. I think it is only the pump nozzle that is different, smaller for the sporty.

And another for the TPS Mod

Re:HSR Purchase advice . 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Hi Guys , all info much appreciated , I have been following all the HSR 42 threads here and on the RSR forum ( most by ERBMAN !) Im really looking for opinions as to which is the Best way to buy initially , considering alterations that need be done afterwards . IE does anyone think the MAX AIR Kit or Speedstar is worth the bucks or is it better to pick up a Blank Carb off Ebay and purchase the Jet kit, yost power tube, and Choke cables etc seperately . As I said in my first post , there seems to be quite a few options and Pricing in accordance with those options when it comes to buying the Carb to start with. .Oh yeah and is the Speedstar Carb only a 45 mm rather than a 42 mm .

Thanks and anyone that can be helped by this thread , welcome to it .
sailrider.
