I believe that Dynatek makes the only coils available other than Yamaha stock coils. Ebay Stock Coils Here

Nemesis made them, but I think no more. Maybe you can find a pair of them.

Do a search and find the best price for your application.

Maybe Clifford can help you or someone can point you to a good buy.

Ebay has them at the best price. However, I think I will buy a used set of working coils ($20/eBay) and try to run the bike before I spend the $130-$150 on a set of Dynateks. Thanks for the help Rayjay.

I have finally had the time to start looking at the bike again. Tried a few suggestions and it still won't start. Switched out the coils, stil won't start. All cylinders are getting spark. However, the rear two cylinders are hitting/spraking once every four revolutions when I run the starter.

I'll post a picture of the bike later today. I finsished the paint, battery cover, seat post, and brakes. All that's left is getting it to start. Man!

A Yamaha Rep. once told me that it was important that the wires to each coil be reconnected exactly like they were. ie. the orange and r/b hooked to the same terminals they came off of. Don't know why but that's what he said. According to the manual the coils are on a ground side switch so with the ignition switch on the R/B wire to each coil should be hot. The other two wires, O and Gy2 will cause the coil to fire when they are grounded by the igniter.

The manual doesn't state which cylinder the O or Gy2 wires go to. Maybe there is someone here with their tank off that can tell you. It does state that the right side coil is for the front (#2) cylinder and the left side is for the rear (#1) cylinder.

Crap! You're right. The manual doesn't indicate which wire goes on what side of the coil (does the orange go on the outside?).

I just had my tank off the other day but had no reason to look. I do remember that coils of old had a positive and negative terminal. Since the spark signal is triggered off the crank that makes the Road Star a dual fire meaning the plug fires on every crank revolution whether the cylinder is on the compression stroke or not.

Hopefully there is someone out there with the tank off at this moment.

Did you have the engine apart at all? The pickup coil rotor is mounted to the primary drive gear under the left cover and it can be installed backwards. There are timing marks on the rotor and they must face the outside. If you had the transmission recall done while the bike was down this rotor would have been removed and reinstalled. Just a thought.

Orange wire is on the left side coil on the inside next to the frame rail. R/B connects to both coils on the outside on the left one & inside on the right, Gy2 goes to the remaining terminal. Thought the OR wire was where I hooked my dwell tach, but I had to go look to make sure which side it was on. Got the rest off the wiring diagram. Hope this helps.

Yup! I took the motor out the frame and had the dealer do the recall on it while I had the new neck welded on for the springer. Then I put it all back together in the grage using the manual and the handy tech articles here on the forum. I am going to be on this until I figure it out, or have to go back to work on Tuesday!

In the mean time, here is a pick of the bike during the final mock up...

Now that's retro! I've always liked the springer front end because it doesn't dive when braking and all the working pieces are out there where you can get to them.

Anyway, if the dealer did the recall then they had to split the case and as I said the pickup coil rotor can be remounted either of two ways with only one way being correct. If it's mounted with the timing marks facing inward then the engine is probably firing on the exhaust stroke.

They shouldn't have needed to remove the cams to perform the recall and hopefully they didn't. But with some dealers you never know.

Thanks, Scott. I am gonna go through the manual trouble shooting guide one more time and see where that leads me. If I can't get it then, I'm probably going to take it to my friend and pay to get it running.
