carb noise with hypercharger 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Hi, I put a hypercharger on my 07 Roadstar and jetted it. It seems to be running great but when I first start it and put my ear next to the hypercharger opening I can hear a tapping noise.I checked out what I could for something vibrating, but it seems to be coming from the carb. After I ride for a while it goes away.I used the jets that came with the kit,182.5 main, needle in 2nd groove, air bleed 1.3 and 37.5 pilot pms out 3 turns ,this is what they suggested. I also removed the ais system.Any ideas what this may be or am I worried about nothing? Thanks

sounds like the lifter noise. perfectly normal when the bike is first started up and the when the noise goes away the lifters have pumped up and are working correctly

Thanks for the reply! I still find it a little strange because my Dad has a hypercharger too and it dosen't make the same noise. Could it be caused by the jetting? Thanks for the advice

I don't have a HyperCharger, but helped a friend install one on his Vulcan 800. I do know this, the butterflies on the HyperCharger are vacuum-actuated & open when engine vacuum increases. When we idled his Vulcan down like he likes to get that "lope", the vacuum was low & the butterflies "fluttered" & created a tapping sound opening & closing so rapidly. If your Roadie idles very low, especially cold, this could be your tapping sound. Does it go away if you rev it a little?

Hi, when I rev it up cold my pipes drown out the tap,but it goes away when I ride around a while. Its not the butterflies either because mine dosen't flutter. I asked Kury about that and they said its because I put the vacuum line directly on the intake manifold because I removed my ais. Thanks for your help.

Like Jon D stated, it's probably just the normal sounds of an air-cooled, overhead valve, pushrod engine. What type/weight engine oil are you using?

What's the climate like where you live? You might try a 10W-40 or something close. 20W-50 is pretty thick & takes awhile to get circulated up to the valvetrain. I have in the past, but have ceased using car oil in my motorcycles. If you want Castrol I'd like to recommend the "Act>evo X-TRA 4T 10W-40" or "Power RS V-Twin 20W-40". I personally use Shell Rotella T 5W-40 Synthetic & my valvetrain is very quiet.
