Horrible Gas Milage??? HELP PLEASE!! 2 Years, 3 Months ago
With all the talk about the gas mileage you guys are getting with your scoots this has really been bothering me so for the last week I have been tracking my MPG and this is what I have come up with. 3 full tanks and I am averaging only 135 miles per tank, and in doing this I have really been behaving with the throttle, the first two tanks were mostly highway but some town driving, the 3rd was strictly highway today and never got over 70 and again really easy on the throttle. DISCLAIMER!! I am in no way a mechanic so please keep that in mind with your replies PLEASE, My bike had V&H long shots when I bought it and I was told the carb was re-jetted when they put them on. The only other thing I can think of is I did the mod of putting holes in the filler neck to make it easier to fill the tank and really topped the tank off on all three tests runs. I really like my local dealership they have really treated me VERY WELL, but the answer to this question from them is I have to take the drop in mileage with the pipes???? This doesn't seem right with what you guys are reporting? Any and all help is appreciated and again THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

If the rest of it is stock, then it didn't need re-jetting..It's probably too rich...Do you have the stock air box...?

I run open pipes (no baffles) & an S&S air cleaner & get 42 to 44mpg. on the highway if I behave myself. The only way to know what's in the carb is to remove it yourself & have a look at the jetting. Most dealerships will jet on the rich side just to cover their butts. If you still have the stock airbox, the carb can be left stock. Rejetting isn't a hard job & you've got all the help in the world right here to step you through it.

You only re-jet if you change both intake and exhaust..At this point, I guess you could put a BAK on it, but I think you still need to find out how the carb is setup. even with the BAK you will probably still be too rich, but it would be an improvement...

The dealership reply is BULL. I have what would be considered straight pipes and every mod I can make without going into the engine. Ported manifold, BAK, AIS removed, iridium plugs, resistors removed from the plug wires and I am NOT carefull with the throttle I blast from light to light and run 70-80 on the highway. I get 36-38 in town and 50-52 highway and my bike is FULL dressed. You get it tuned right you will get better mileage that is the whole trick not matter what mods you have.

OK kinda figured I was gonna have to become a little more mechanical and at least look at the inside of the carb, will start tommorrow, everyone stand-by for this impending disaster but seriously will take a look at it in the morning, to many so far tonight to even begin to start this project, when I get the air cleaner off what do I look for to indicate what kind of jets are in the carb??? and is there a thread or tech article that I can reference to walk me through this so I don't create myself a huge problem??? I did download the manual from Curt's website (Bye the way THANKS CURT, not sure I thanked you yet) is there something in there that can help me?

P.S. I have no earthly idea what a BAK is or what is would do for me????

CPORetired I know you take a loss in gas milage with the a Big Air kit but from just changing stock pipe to performace pipes that just don;t sound right Pipe add power and performance

Big air kit....... generic term for aftermarket air filters.. If (a big if) your carb is actually re-jetted, most likely it has been done in acordance with the pipe manufacturer, they are a bit over optimistic on the requirements..basicly what you have is the exhaust is opened up some but the intake is not, so in reality, you are not getting any more air into the engine than you were before the pipes were changed, but if it's re-jetted, you ARE getting more gas creating a rich mix....and poor MPG...We have some folks near memphis on here, you may be-able to coax them with a beer or two...LOL,, I live on the other end of the state or I'd give ya hand...

A BAK is a big air kit. Lot's of guys run the Barons BAK. Barons also has probably the best jetting kits too, although I'm using the Dynojet. There are plenty of articles that discuss jetting in the tech section. Don't worry, the only wrong question is the one that's never asked.
