I got back on 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Well I took the plunge yesterday. I pulled the Chicken out and bled the rear brakes, must have gotten air in em from being upside down, replaced the left mirror and rear seat cover. Started her up and she ran a little rough but it was cooler out and I think my choke is sticking a little. Threw the helmet on and took her around the block. What a feeling. I think the bars may be tweaked a little or it may just be my shoulder from all the surgeries….lol.

Now the big question is going to be do I trike it or sell it. I sure do like being out their but the wife starts crying every time I even talk about riding which is not a good thing.

I wonder how big a deal a trike with no reverse is to ride. I was thinking about that the other day, reverse would be a wonderful thing to have!

Glad to hear that your your recovery is going well. Only you will know what is the right thing for you and your family (as far as riding goes), and I'm sure you will make the right decision.

Well that's a big step neighbor! Congrats,
Be weary of the brakes, mine had a small split where the engine guard came back and split the line right there about where the foot valve is. So I had em, and then they went out.
Far as a trike, goes, I think I'd sell it and get a GW trike. It's just a lot more friendly trike environment.

Good to hear your mending Howie, I'll give ya my 2, If your body mends well enough to handle the bike, I would fix it and get back on it. I think a trike is actually more dangerous than the bike...But it's your call...

Thinking that I may get a trike in a couple of years. Just curious as to your thoughts on why the trike is more dangerous.

Nice to hear you got the Chicken out again, even if just around the block. Glad you are healed enough to do that. A reverse would be great on a trike, but even without it, though it might be hard to manoeuvre at low speeds and so on, at least you wouldn't have to worry about it falling over on you. I would also like to hear why Flashback thinks a trike is dangerous. Visibility? I have sure liked the ones I've seen. Anyway, glad you got er back out for a bit of a ride, Howie.

Well I have only ridden a trike a few times so I'm surely no expert, but I don't feel they are very stable at anything over 40 mph if a quick adjustment in direction is required. A bike just feels more agile to me, but then I'm used to the bike. I'm sure with practice, I might feel differently..I know in the ATV world, the 3 wheelers were way more unstable than a 4 wheeler. I've ridden with some folks that have them, and they are not able to stay with the group if the roads get a bit twisty...What experiences have you folks had?

First of all really glad to hear you are feeling better, hope things continue to heal thoroughly for you. As far as your wifes feelings no one other than you and her together can make the right decision for you both. As far as triking a bike I have looked into it a bit and alot of people have recommended Mitchell Family Motor Trikes LLC at http://mitchells-trikes.com/ for information even if you do not have them make the trike for you, they are supposedly very high quality trike makers with great information, the only thing is you cannot buy a kit from them they have to do the conversion for you. I sent them a couple emails and always got fast replies with very helpful information. Seemed like they were very nice people. Below are some quick points they have listed on their website:

Are trikes safer than motorcycles?

Without question yes. And we have several reasons to support this.

First, trikes are self-stabilized vehicles, meaning you don't have to keep them balanced at all times while starting, stopping, turning, swerving, backing, braking and parking.

Second, trikes can swerve at highways speeds while braking without turning over. Hard breaking mixed with a yank on the handlebars can spell disaster on a motorcycle. But a trike is much more capable of handling sudden road danger.

Third, it is possible for a trike to receive an external blow without tipping over. Though no one likes getting into a wreck, on rare occasion our company has done repair work for wrecked trikes. So far in every situation we've come across, no one has been turned over from or ejected by their trike.

Fourth, trikes have greater visibility. This is true especially from the front and back. Converting a motorcycle into a trike increases your width by several feet, meaning road traffic is more likely to see you than if you were just on a motorcycle.
